Just joined so I'm introducing myself.

I will be 67 next month and retired from the many different jobs in my working life. I guess that I didn’t ever find my calling. I went to university at age 59 but when it was over it was too late to launch a new career. I wanted to lecture but students don’t want to listen to old fogies, so sadly I put aside that idea and settled into life as an eccentric dog owner.

I live in a beautiful Lancashire valley surrounded by hills that demand they be walked/climbed, how could I refuse?

I would like to do a bit of cycle touring but a recent diagnosis of spondylosis and some hip pain means that I may not be doing a world tour anytime soon!

I’m keen to make some friends as I have been on my own for a very long time now, my daughters don’t bother much with me and I don’t have a partner.I didn’t expect to be so isolated at this time in my life, isn’t it strange the way family and friends seem to forget us when we get past 60?

I will pop in regularly and hope to strike up some friendships.

Hi celtwichj
I live in South Wales and like you with the daughters have a son who doesn't bother much and a husband whose only interest is sitting in front of the TV nursing the cat sometimes I feel as if I have a ninety five year old. Anyway must stop complaining. Couple of ideas why not join your local U3A and if there isn't one try and get one going. You say you were at University so why not offer to give talks to WI and other social groups, I give talks on Domestic Superstition, Crystal Healing and History of Personal Names and have made friends with members . Another avenue is to try some free courses from Future Learn, just type Future Learn on your web browser and have a look at what is on offer. Travelling with Saga is great as there are always other single people on trips and you can team up and make friends with them I know I've done it Good Luck.

Just want to say hello and say a little about myself. I'm 62 been a widow for nearly 10 years. I'm still working full time have two sons and four grandchildren all of which live 100 plus miles from me in opposite directions. I have a few very close friends but again they don't live close by. I like to camp in the summer months, love swimming, reading and various crafts. I hate winter and just want the lighter evening to arrive. I worry about the future as need to sell my house this year but don't know where to move too, all feels too big a decision to make. Look forward to chatting to others in similar situation.
Response from CaroleAH made on 13th Feb 2017 00:53:02
Hi Tilly,
Welcome to the site. You don't say if you need to carry on working but if you do, then in my opinion you need to think very carefully about where you move to. No matter what anyone tries to tell you, we live in an ageist society and getting a job at 62 might not be easy. If your sons live 100 miles away either side of you, would it be better to stay where you are and keep the job you are in or do you envisage moving nearer to one of them? You say that you have to sell your house - would it be possible after selling it to rent somewhere for 6 months so that you can catch your breath and start trawling through the property websites. Don't be too rigid in your list of "wants" and "must haves" because what might suit you now, might not be suitable in 20 years time. When I had to leave the village I had lived in for nearly 10 years, I was heartbroken, but I rented a flat for 6 months, haunted the Rightmove and Zoopla websites and eventually decided that although I didn't like living in a flat because I wanted my own bit of garden, I did actually like living on one level so I bought a little bungalow - something I would never have considered before my sojourn in the flat. Down-sizing was difficult - amazing how much stuff you can accumulate over the years but I'm more or less organised, can whizz round the housework in a few hours and have my small garden to potter in. If everything feels too much of a big decision to make, talk with your family and friends and put things on hold until Spring arrives with sunshine and lighter nights. Good luck!

I would love to have a rich lover to take me everywhere LOL!! Ok just dreaming. Is this not everyone's dream; but of course instead I wish I had the money back this nation and others robbed for me of then I could take the person I love on a trip around the world. I think if I had money again I may never stop traveling. I want to find a travel partner and just go. I am going to sell all my things except for a some old books and a few things I must keep. I am leaving a very special place, it will be very difficult and so I just want to keep moving . Have you seen those long cruises, like for 6 months, that would be a blast with the right person, where we just had the right spirit to have fun, no politics, or religion, just culture, culture, culture, and great food, music, dancing and wine. . Taking in all the sites and art.
Response from Jenninora made on 12th Feb 2017 09:18:06
Welcome Romanticdreamer. In this turbulent world we have every right to wish to escape to some life of ease and culture. I have traveled and know. I also love to read travel books and I want a great read when I do. I hope you find someone to share with what you want to do. Keep the dream and go. Follow your heart ( maybe just a dream, but it is yours.) Write a diary on the way. Write a book for future readers. X

Hello...this is my first post...from Hong Kong where I have been living and working for the past 3+ years. It's been work and nothing else so far and I feel that it is time to cultivate some friendships, more so now that I'm on my own...have been so for almost a year. Looking forward to new friends here...
Response from Monkess17 made on 18th Jan 2017 22:43:10
Hi and thanks for your response, LittleMinx! Indeed, Hong Kong is a city that never sleeps...and the food....really good! Let me know what you want to know although I can't say I'm an expert on the country

Have a lovely day....must be cold where you are.
Response from ActiveM made on 9th Feb 2017 22:15:26
Hi Monkess17, Welcome. I to am new to the group. Hong Kong, wow, many happy memories for me there, a long time ago. Ihave been back a couple of times, its ever onward and upward. We could do with a little of your warmth, but not the pollution that rolled down over Lion Rock the last time I was there.

Hi everyone, joined this forum 2 days ago , think I am going to really enjoy it, lots of interesting reads, a bit about myself, my name is Sue and I have been living in Spain for 10 years now, its been a wonderful experience for our family, I have a son who is back in the uk at Lincoln University, who I miss lots, and a daughter who will be attending Surrey university this September, Looking forward to ending the school run, Miss the UK loads but hopefully we will be getting a small place back there very soon, I will look forward to reading the many articles x
Response from Wilf made on 8th Feb 2017 13:35:13
Hi Susan, Welcome to Silversurfers there are lots of friendly folk here. I have been on a few years and really enjoy it. We were only talking to some friends who have a place in Malaga the otehr day about how nice it must be with the lovely weather and a more laid back way of life. i know when we go to Spain, Portugal or Turkey for our hols I just totally relax but I guess kits a bit different if you live there.
Response from susandavison made on 8th Feb 2017 15:46:11
Having the beautiful weather and seeing the sun a lot helps, the summers are hard, I am still not used to the heat, but we do it the Spanish way now, only out in the sun for a few hrs late on in the afternoon and we have become nocturnal, it is a nice way of life, its enabled us to go out as family lots, its cheap to eat out here and the, whole family is always welcome, my son who is at Lincoln university is always complaining how miserable the weather is back in the UK,, , funny cause when he lived here, he always complained about the heat, I am glad we went for our dream, its been a great experience, good and bad, sometimes I look back and think, wow we did all that, I will be honest I would be scared now, but I would say, anyone thinking about, do it...

Hi Sue We had a place on the Costa del Sol for 9 years and used to spend around half of the year out there. I thought I would miss it when we sold it but now I find that I enjoy and appreciate the changes of season back here. We did have some really good times out there though and made some good friends
Response from susandavison made on 9th Feb 2017 09:41:10
Hi There, we are hoping to do that, half here and half there, maybe winter here and summer back there, I don't get back to the Uk often, only been back twice in ten years, being away makes you realise what you miss, I miss grass hahaha simple things, the country side, things we all probably take for granted, we do get the seasons here, but not the same, I miss autumn and the colours changing, I consider home, where ever, its what we make of it,, so when we do get a place back there, I will embrace it, we live a 10 min drive from Benidorm, at a place called Alfas del pi, its a wonderful town, and has everything we need, What ever anyone says about Benidorm, its a wonderful place and has something for everyone, what ever your age, Kids are becoming more independent now, so we can make decisions for us now, another chapter in our life opening ....
Response from TerryO made on 9th Feb 2017 13:37:58
I wish you all the best for that then Sue. When we were down on the Costa I drove all the way up the Med Coast to Barcelona and there are some amazing places on the way
Response from susandavison made on 9th Feb 2017 15:33:51
wow, that's a really long drive, we like going to Madrid, makes a change from the coast for us, lots of beautiful places to visit here in Spain, we love being by the sea, before we lived here, we were nearly 10 years in Cornwall, beautiful place,

Welcome to the site - I don't know who or why someone gave you a "thumbs down" - how rude!!! I gave you a "thumbs up" so have cancelled it out :-). I've found that by looking at "Latest Posts" or "Latest Subjects" I can follow the trends and keep up with what's going on.

Its just called 'consideration' - consideration to others who may have popped in to welcome newcomers or introduce themselves, only to then find some are monopolising via general chit chat. SS can be confusing for newcomers thus they may start to wonder if they are in the right place for intros.
Response from Findingthetime made on 1st Feb 2017 09:37:25
Quite right about it being confusing. I am very IT literate, but I'm find the layout very confusing!
Response from twobikemike made on 1st Feb 2017 09:44:22
Of course you're confused - the rest of the population think that's the condition we're in once we reach 50? 60? 70?!!!
Response from Findingthetime made on 1st Feb 2017 16:07:04
I'll keep trying!

Hi, I'm Mike. 69, retired since March and figured its time to see what's happening outside the confines of my garden!
I have many interests and am sure I will spend many happy hours browsing the forums.
Response from twobikemike made on 28th Jan 2017 22:18:40
Hello LM, nice to know there's someone out there, and yes, motorbikes are one of the things I enjoy.
I see you're heavily into computer games - well it probably won't come as a surprise to hear that my gaming time is spent bike racing. Oh yes, I also play golf against Tiger Woods two or three times a week - on the PS3!!
Response from twobikemike made on 29th Jan 2017 12:25:43
Donnington and Silverstone are the only two I visit (BSB & MotoGP) though if I'm honest I much prefer to watch it on TV, that way you get to see all the action. However, a visit to the track is the only way to get the real atmosphere - and spend a bunch of money!!
I see you enjoy discussing Drake's Equation - much to my shame I had to 'google it'! Intriguing but probably wasted on me - a discussion that would pass way above my head.
Best if I stick to current affairs and getting my backside kicked by Tiger on the golf course!!
Response from Georgie Girl made on 29th Jan 2017 13:08:53
Hello Mike, welcome.
Response from twobikemike made on 29th Jan 2017 17:31:14
I came second again!!
Response from Georgie Girl made on 30th Jan 2017 15:01:51
Following introductions, it would be beneficial if other topics were maybe carried out under a different heading, in this case i.e. Motorbikes! This way others can also be seen to welcome folk.
Response from twobikemike made on 30th Jan 2017 21:38:11
Oops! I guessed that might happen - someone has to keep us Saga louts in check.
BTW I beat Tiger today. Damn, should I have posted that under Golf? Computer games? Wild animals ...........?
Response from twobikemike made on 30th Jan 2017 23:29:07
Innocent????
Response from CaroleAH made on 31st Jan 2017 00:26:46
Please can I join the Saga Lout club? My daughters already think that the U3A and Silver Surfers are some kinds of cults for OLD people so let's confirm their suspicions!!!
Response from twobikemike made on 31st Jan 2017 09:19:08
Let me know if/when the 'Saga Lout' post is up and running - I don't want to incure the wrath of the moderators again!
I guess there's an area for general chit chat on this site - I just haven't researched it yet.

I think Tiger had an off-day. I'll give the opportunity to get even later.

Hello Silver Surfers.

I joined last year but not used to the site yet.

I am 59 and unemployed for over 4 years .My husband works long hours.

I left school with no qualifications due to the death of a parent but this was never an issue in the past. My CV has huge gaps in it due to unemployment and child care and I am unable to obtain any references.. I have applied for for numerous jobs but agencies will not take me on their books. I simply cannot find work and have over 6 years until retirement.

I spend hours alone in the house with no one to see or talk to.. Most of my friends are either working or retired but busy with commitments such as looking after grand children or plain "busy" (some are rude and criticise me whenever I phone them and never phone me)
Hopefully I will find work and get out more when I get free travel at 60.
I would love to find silver surfers in the same position to keep in touch with.
Response from Denys1954 made on 29th Jan 2017 07:10:11
Hi Mauritius and welcome. I am sorry to hear about your work problems It will depend on where you live on whether you will get free travel when you are 60 or not, where I am you have to be over retirement age. What sort of work are you looking for?
