CaroleAH's bio
I live in North Yorkshire and I am happily retired after working nearly 40 years for the NHS – initially in A&E reception and then as a Practice Manager for a surgery in Leeds. I am an active member of my local U3A – and a member of various groups including a Book Group, Singing for Fun, Gardening and Science & Technology to name just a few. I love photography – mainly landscapes, seascapes, architecture, especially churches and cathedrals, and plants. My cameras tend to stay on fully automatic because my mind goes blank when the experts start talking about depth of field, white noise - what is that all about for heaven's sake, and other technicalities! I am also interested in genealogy and have compiled many family trees for relatives and those for the men commemorated on the local war memorial – that was an interesting project for 2014 and updated in 2018; not sure that I shall be around for 2045 to update the WW2 details! -

Remembrance Day PoemI'm sure it was written by a soldier who was probably in a muddy trench waiting for the command to go over the top.ViewDate:

Are you concerned about proposed Post Office closures? My local post office is in the Spar shop and it is not unusual to have to wait in a queue of 6 or more people, especially at this time of year when people want to post letters /cards abroad or parcels to family etc. If many post offices close then Royal Mail will lose out on collecting their extortionate postage because people will just send emails or E-cards.ViewDate:

When dining out, is it okay for your friend/partner to dig into your plate of food?I think that I would have been horrified as well WhiteCrow! I have been known to pinch a chip from my daughters' plates - at home, but would never do so in a restaurant.ViewDate:

Job/career change in later lifeI think that I would start a list with the Pro's and Con's of changing jobs e.g. how far do you travel at present to your job and the cost, have you built up an entitlement to annual leave, are you good at chatting with people, do you want to work indoors or outdoors? When you have done that, you could list the skills that you already have and whether they are transferable to a different type of work. You could also look in the local newspapers to see what jobs are being advertised. Just another thought - how would this affect your pension? Good Luck!ViewDate:

Suzy Makin showcase imageI have Googled this young man and he is truly inspirational. He joined the army aged 15 and was wounded twice in France. He was returned home when his true age was made known but returned to France in 1918 and was awarded the Victoria Cross at the age of 19. He joined up again for WW2 and was killed in action near Haifa, Israel.ViewDate:

DespatchesYou are so right, Billythequiche. I was at a Quiz night last night and a red-hot Labour supporter on our team was trying to convince us that we, all pensioners, had no reason to fear this government's policies. Where is Guy Fawkes when we need him???ViewDate:

CaroleAH showcase imageThank-you, Wilf. I also remember the Tower of London display and Selby Abbey had a wonderful display with red poppies and purple ones for all the horses lost in WW1. We must never forget the sacrifice made by families in all the wars we have fought in.ViewDate:

Worried about my parent'sI agree with Tristy - you should talk to your Dad and see how he feels about the situation. Presumably his GP has got your Dad's blood pressure under control and should also know about your Mum's problems. Has the surgery offered any advice or help? You could ensure that their medication is ordered and, perhaps, delivered if necessary on time and also help with the food shopping so that they have nutritous meals.ViewDate:

Do you think winter fuel payment should be means tested?I have recently read in the media that Rachel Reeves is proposing to stop the 25% reduction on Council Tax for people living alone. Neither this, nor the abolition of the winter fuel payment for most pensioners was mentioned in the Labour manifesto. Keir Starmer just says that there are hard choices to make - I wonder what they will clobber us with next!ViewDate:

Do you know the difference between a physician associate and a doctor?Getting an appointment at my surgery can be quite difficult and you are often twentieth in the queue on the phone, but the following entry on the local Facebook page really made me laugh: "I'm willing to swap an Oasis ticket for an appointment at the surgery. Is it a face to face appointment or a telephone consulation? It's a telephone appointment. Awww! I won't bother then." We have some excellent Nurse Practitioners - more empathetic than some of the Doctors and having worked as a Practice Manager for many years I know how difficult the jobs in the surgery can be..ViewDate:
