What are your views on TV Charity Begging Adverts?

Over a number of years there has and even more lately been endless adverts asking for money, from children through to animals and onto water and so on. Of course there are many reasons to give money but are we the only ones in England constantly being asked to give money even for other countries through out the world , even in disasters, I too willingly send money to the British Red Cross who do a marvellous job, where I know my donation will get to the most needy of people. But my main concern is why doesn't the governments of some of these countries try and help their own people instead of people here in England constantly being bombarded with begging adverts, what are your views regarding TV begging adverts, and at tea time too?

Don’t like begging & generally it’s by over paid celebs probably being paid to do it & if they are not, it is free publicity for them. If people were paid their value, like nurses, doctors firefighters etc & celebs were paid their actual worth, we probably wouldn’t need so many charities

Some of them are horrendous, and you can't give to everyone so end up feeling bad.
Also the woe is me for certain disabilities isn't a good thing as it paints all people with them disabilities in a bad light when there are plenty who live their lives happy and contented and don't want to be pitied.
With them in particular they should tell the truth, x person is living their life but with a bit of extra help here's what maybe improved!

I do not respond to these adverts for money. You never know what proportion of the money gifted is actually going to help these people. In a lot of cases the leaders of these countries are filthy rich and do nothing about their own people. There is a lot of poverty in the United Kingdom with families not able to manage financially, older people can't afford heat, food banks etc. Charity begins at home. More should be done for our own people.

I agree with you .How long have we been supporting these governments? I have brother living in Spain and he says there are no begging ads there ever. They must think British people are an easy touch! Colin 7

It's not just in England that you get bombarded with begging ads. I' m in Scotland and we get it to the point where it has hardened me towards donating anything any more. My main gripe is the ad for "wateraid". 30 years they' ve been asking for money! What are they doing with it apart from paying big wages to all their staff? I also object to charities using so called personalities to ask me for my hard earned. Why don't they give from one of their healthy bank accounts? So far I give monthly to three charities: "Sightsavers"," "Howl of a dog" and SPCA.Thanknyou for the opportunity to rant. Colin7

I am sick to death of hearing it, it's getting too much. I think they should be banned, because they only seem to come on when it's Christmas and people can't afford it.
I'm sorry but I would help my own people in my own country way before I help anyone outside, it's disgusting how these charities can bombard Our TV's with that many adverts that I have to turn my TV over.
Get these begging adverts toned down.
Enough is enough

I agree. I saw an advert yesterday to give £150. To treat a young boy in a third world country to fix his cleft lip.
I sure feel for the lad. But the UK people have been giving to Africa since I was a boy. Now 63. And they are still begging. Do their own country not do anything for them? I mean if the charities haven't sorted the problem in 63 years how much more do they want

I am never quite sure who these very expensive ads are aimed at. I suppose they must work or they would not put them on but I do not know anyone who gives to them. With program recording and fast forward most people bypass them anyway.

I cannot understand why we are being asked to provide money to places like India which can afford a space program and has many billionaires. I know there is abject poverty there but that is the fault of the Indian government and is actually quite deliberate.

I never give to large charities . Why are there so many? We only need one cancer charity, on children's charity, one disaster charity, etc. In most cases these charities are run to provide jobs for the people involved. Like many of the large pharmaceutical companies they do not want to find a solution. Their interests lie in perpetuating the problems.

I never give to charities advertising on TV or using chuggers, if asked I always ask what their Chief Executive is earning (usually these posts attract salaries of over £100k).
Most national charities are usually funded by central government anyway nowadays to further their own political agendas and not the good causes they once were.
I give to local charities where the results of their income is much more evident.
Response from Wilf made on 4th Dec 2018 18:36:22
I give quite a lot to charities but in general I agree their Chief Execs are paid obscene amounts of money-and they all seem to be the same staff on a merry go round. Better to use excellent retired chief execs for a fraction of the money who would do the work for altruistic reasons. Plus a lot of waste in most of these outfits.

We seem to be applying the same method to solve problems - throw money at it, and expect the result to b different. It didn't work in Ethiopia, Sudan or Syria, and it won't work in future.

I am in Spain at the moment - there are NO, i repeat NO begging ads on Spanish TV, I have recently been to Dubai, Iraq and Portugal and I have yet to see any begging ads? Am I paranoid or does it seem to others that they are only asking us (Mugs in the UK volunteering OUR MONEY so that they look to be "Caring")

A lot of charities like save the children and wateraid are covered by children in need and sport or comic relief I dont trust a lot of these ads.Apparently a lot of money goes to the wrong places

Although I don't give to these Charities [I have my own that I support], the ones that always baffle me are the health/operation ones.

e.g. If you give £3 this person can have a cataract operation and you can save their eyesight.

How comes it costs £3 for the operation in.....(whatever land)..... but costs the NHS £1000's?

I used to give generally to international charities but after such bad publicity about funds not reaching those in real need I now give to local causes instead. I think the money goes to the right place and after all the government gives so much in overseas aid that I really think they don't need any more from me.

These adverts are shown in Britain not just England ,like you I give to certain charities of my choice and hope others give in the same way. However I do feel these adverts are aimed at a wide audience and if it helps raise funds well and good.

Does the money get there??? Also Wateraid there has always been water cleaning tablets around as long as I can remember. My son bought some in the States. They are cheap. Anyway their Governments should be dealing with it not us we have enough problems.

Stick to your known charity and don't be swayed by anyone who wants to divert your donations from that.

The subject of TV commercials is often children from areas of the world which have not idea of birth control. Charities have been "saving" children for decades and still need more cash. They have obviously failed. How can we be sure they won't continue to fail.
