Would you be prepared to pay more tax to fund the NHS?It is about time we realized that we are a small country. We cannot afford to support overseas dubious governments neither should we expend so much on aircraft carriers and multi million pound military planes. Let us reconsider our priorities.ViewDate:

Should teaching the National Anthem at school be compulsory? It is useful to know one's own National Anthem. I do feel however that the current one is outdated. Most countries have an anthem relating to their homeland, not an individual. I am not anti-Royal but think that "Land of Hope and Glory" or similar would be more respected. I am always impressed by the fervour shown by the populations of countries such as Poland. After what they have been through This is quite understandable. Closer to home, The Scots and Welsh are not shy about expressing their desire for independence through their own anthems.ViewDate:

How do you feel about giving money as a wedding gift?In some societies money is given by pinning it to the brides dress. Personally I would suggest all gift should be cash. Saves the embarrassing situation of having to accepting gifts which are mostly unwanted. And no shopping!!.ViewDate:

God is deadHello celtwitch. I don't see how someone can be dead when they never existed. Religion baffles me totally. For example superstitious folk etc. are perhaps convinced but this is an one of many old argumentative chestnuts and the powers that be have answers to all the questions put to them. Can't see how it is anything but a means of controlling the population. To what end I don't know.ViewDate:

Should over 70s have to retake their driving test?Wise words indeed but they have nothing to do with how old you are.ViewDate:

Should over 70s have to retake their driving test?I wouldn't trust the examiners who, as part of the body introducing the idea, are very likely to be ageist. The insurance companies are very aware of the risks associated with different sections of society and these are not solely associated with age. If health is a factor then any assessments should be applied to anyone regardless of age. As for triennial renewals; what a farce. All we have to do is fill in a form. What does this achieve? In any case, as all experienced drivers know the driving test bears no resemblance to real life.ViewDate:

Religious choiceAmen to that! Underfunded schools should not be used as part of social services either.ViewDate:

Religious choiceHow true. Opiate of the masses is the common factor in religions. I was chastized at Christmas when I questioned the continued practice of putting on a nativity play at my grandson's school. Catch them early I suppose. It is understandable to follow the teachings of a real person in any walk of life but the concept of god (lower case!) and heaven is ludicrous.ViewDate:

Career advice for over 50s please?Nothing specific but as ageism is still rife in the normal employment market, perhaps an online job is a possibility?ViewDate:

Has the world became less nice and ethical? The amount of litter available has increased, or so it seems. I am sure I needed only one bin per week for household waste. Now there are three and that is not enough. Interesting how services are been curtailed when the need is increasing in this and other respects.ViewDate:

Dating know how advice pleaseThank you for your response. It is much appreciated. I suppose in the age group you mention there are more women, or so we are told, and is therefore not easy being a single senior lady and on that basis it should not be difficult for a chap. I have been trying to "give it a go" for some time but when it comes to the crunch it becomes the Woody Allen scenario. You often hear about people having "exes" in the plural as if it were normal to just jump in and out of relationships almost by the dozen. Not being able to find even one is both pathetic and frustrating. It makes you feel as if you are somehow not part of society. Nil desperandum. Something will turn up.ViewDate:

Did you own a pair of Stanley Matthews Football Boots too?Hi again Wilf My boots pre-dated nylon studs. The studs were made of three or four small leather discs nailed to the boot sole. Imagine getting this down your shins especially once they had become rusty! Proper balls too with laces))))).ViewDate:

English GrammarSpell check only confirms that a word is correctly spelled. It does not check that the actual word is correctly used. (effect, affect; your, you're; etc.)ViewDate:

English GrammarMy grammar leaves a lot to be desired but I spent many agonising years getting to this level. I would hate to find that after all that effort modern society is now telling me it doesn't matter. Why is good grammar seen to be at odds with creativity? They coexisted very well in the past.ViewDate:

Breaking Up Is Hard To DoThank you for your response, RHS, and for pointing out that a proper explanation was not given in my previous comment. I have tried all the main on line introduction agencies giving appropriate criteria etc, Several contacts were suggested it is true but none of them were even close to the given profile. Is it surprising that a certain cynicism is felt?ViewDate:

Coping with the difficulty of ageing parentsSpeaking as an aged parent it is difficult to realise that faculties are diminishing. I feel the same, if not better, than when I was a teenager but my family notice the difference - and they are right of course.ViewDate:

English GrammarPublic notices are prone to errors of this nature. One such related to an establishment's insurance cover regarding liability towards users of the facility. There had been a safety rule change and we were informed that the insurance company would not longer "except" liability if a particular event occurred. I am sure they didn't really mean that.ViewDate:

English GrammarMisuse of language is not the end of the world but it makes an interesting talking point. But sometimes the wrong, or even opposite, meaning is conveyed. For example: I often wonder when people say things like "I don't know nothing" or "can I do ...." (when asking permission) if they realise what they have said. You could go on for a long time with similar examples. It would be interesting to know fellow surfers' favourites. E&OE!ViewDate:

Countdown to disasterSuccessive governments don't take the subject seriously. They obviously don't believe either. If the belief was there it would mean more than recycling a few milk cartons to stop it. I am old enough to remember when we were conned into thinking recycling old saucepans would go towards making Spitfires. It is just another business enterprise. I know some folk in this area of commerce and they boast about it as being as good as printing your own money. However, global warming should not be used as an excuse for making the air we breathe cleaner. This should be done as a matter of good housekeeping anyway. London smog is a thing of the past so it can be done with more current sources of pollution.ViewDate:

What are your views on TV Charity Begging Adverts?Stick to your known charity and don't be swayed by anyone who wants to divert your donations from that. The subject of TV commercials is often children from areas of the world which have not idea of birth control. Charities have been "saving" children for decades and still need more cash. They have obviously failed. How can we be sure they won't continue to fail.ViewDate:

Breaking Up Is Hard To DoYou are certainly not alone. Problem is what to do about it. On line introductions are a no no and I have found that singles groups seem to be for people who want a social life but also want to remain single.
