I am 57 and retiring in July. I have done many things on my bucket list, in fact have had more than one !

I have been on a couple of luxury safaris to Kenya and South Africa. I am now planning to track the gorillas in Uganda. The permit for the day to do this costs ยฃ500, so this is not a cheap holiday and it involves trekking through the jungle for 5/6 hrs, to watch them for an hour.

Seeing Pavarotti for an hour wasn't cheap either, but an experience I shall never forget...

I Intend to go for 10 days, early Feb 2017,staying in lodges and visiting a volcanic crater, as well as watching chimpanzees in different parts of Uganda.
Response from ela made on 7th Jul 2016 20:13:08
Hi, Are you intending to see more of Uganda as well? I would like to go, but would be interested in visiting other parts of Uganda as well as the gorillas.
I am also interested in Rwanda.
Ela
Response from Mozzie made on 6th Aug 2016 08:13:50
Hi Ela

I have a 10 day itinerary with Audley Travel. The gorillas is only part of it, but it is all nature based.

I couldn't go for longer, and was told by them that there is more to see in Uganda than Rwanda.

I obviously wouldn't feel safe travelling alone, and as much as I am prepared to trek etc, I do appreciate luxury accommodation and facilities when I have completed the day's activities!
Response from Mozzie made on 6th Aug 2016 08:21:48
Hi Ela

This is indeed a badly decided site! I have commented but it seems to have disappeared into the ether!

I have got a 10 day itinerary with Audley Travel, whom I have used before to go to Guatemala & Belize with. I need to feel safe, with good people on the ground locally.

The gorillas is only part of it , but it is all nature based. Chimpanzees and a volcanic crater. Apparently there is more to see in Uganda and I am limited on time, which is why I am not going to Rwanda.

I am quite happy to trek daytime, but need luxury accommodation and facilities to recuperate in the evening!

I think in theory it sounds great to just reach out in a "virtual" forum for a travel companion, where whoever reads or responds will ultimately be meeting a total stranger for a considerable period of travelling. I think most people before diving in to such a situation would want to at least have some interaction (real world) or at least lots of email contact, then phone chats to determine, if one: they felt you got on, had enough in common apart from a holiday, and two: if they felt secure. Personally speaking, and of course this may only be me, but before I even considered travelling with someone I would want to get to know them very well, they visit me, and vice versa. If it weren't important for people to "know" someone before embarking on such a trip, then one may as well go alone anyway as everyone you come across will be total strangers on your travels, and that, I suspect is what you are trying to avoid.
Response from KEITH_WL made on 4th Aug 2016 13:57:52
You make a further point here, Suzanne, and I realise that there was an omission in my last response: There is a difference between meeting someone encountered online (which is what I have done) and travelling with someone. Clearly the requirement is greater in the second case.

I have travelled with two different female friends but both my wife and I had known them already as friends for some time.

There are always likely to be disagreements, and there were, but they were short-lived and not serious. 'Quarrel-recovery' is a potential problem worth giving attention to.

I've just booked a cruise for next year. I have been allocated a singles cabin, but have still had to pay a single supplement: this just doesn't make sense!

The cruise company can offer no explanation. I wouldn't go except the ship is calling at two places that are on my "to do list" before I pop my clogs.

Your thoughts/comments would be appreciated.
Response from Lindylootoo made on 2nd Aug 2016 16:51:46
Have you checked that your cruise ship really does have single cabins? It sounds to me you have been allocated a cabin for single use, which someone has termed "singles cabin". If the ship really does have single cabins, you should most certainly not pay a single supplement.

I have been feeling very restless lately, as I get older, my children are grown up all I do is work. I don't have friends of sorts only work colleagues and they are married, busy with work etc so apart from seeing them at work I have no social life. But what I would like to do is go away for a weekend in the UK. I love walking, hiking or just doing sightseeing. I don't like just sunbathing holidays. So does anyone go on solo holidays and make new friends. I live in Norfolk but would travel anywhere interesting.
Response from Fflorielle made on 31st Jul 2016 08:41:12
I have never been on a solo holiday, had a traveling companion until just a few months ago i do like the same kind of holidays as you but feel maybe out of your age group, i have been retired for some years now.
Response from Daisy53 made on 31st Jul 2016 09:34:25
People always say to me you are as old as you feel, so Fflorielle if you are able to do walking, and get out and about age is just a number. Some days I ache especially with one of my knees, as I have arthritis. But I just take it easy and go at a slower pace.
Response from smudger15 made on 31st Jul 2016 16:57:42
where abouts in the country are you? Im in leicestershire and go walking with the dog quite often. Always try to get away with him to cornwall and the lakes (if you like dogs)
Response from Daisy53 made on 31st Jul 2016 17:00:04
mlhmb, will be very happy to meet up with you. Scotland is a wonderful place and would hope one day to live there, and do as you do and walk everyday.
Response from Daisy53 made on 31st Jul 2016 17:07:20
Smudger15 I haven't really thought where I would like to go, just happy to go anywhere. Don't fancy going aboard as there is so much of the UK I haven't seen.

Reasonably fit and healthyish 63 years young (!) looking for a travelling companion, preferably female, to ultimately visit Australia in the first half of 2018. Would love to revisit Sydney, an amazing city, and also the Barrier Reef which I didn't get to on previous visit. Possibly a few city escapes this year - UK and Europe - to get to know each other, and maybe a time away somewhere next year but lots of planning for the priority of Australia. The single supplements can be quite a burden but also for a trip like this it would be nice to have someone to share the experiences with.
Response from Lindylootoo made on 23rd Jul 2016 13:18:35
Hello Tony
What ideas do you have for your visit to Australia? This is definitely on my bucket list, but I would hope to hire a camper for some of the trip. Where in this trip would single supplements be avoided and how long would you plan to spend out there?

Divorced lady 63 - considering Goa in January 2017. Having company, but own room, would be good.
Response from Sunseeker1 made on 27th Jul 2016 20:53:32
Hi Lindylootoo If you had said Sri Lanka I would have said lets chat, as its a wonderful island full of lovely scenery, wildlife and culture. Not that I'm into too much touring as I am happy with a bit of luxury. If you change destination let me know. I'm also 63 and widowed last year.
Response from Lindylootoo made on 30th Jul 2016 13:56:08
Hi Sunseeker. It's a great shame I didn't get your message earlier as I've now booked Goa for three weeks in January, but Sri Lanka is definitely on my bucket list, though not sure when as I'm off to Cuba in March 2017. I tried to send you a private message with my email address on, but the website didn't seem keen to send that message........and a private "chat" appears to be some kind of semi-live thing - probably with huge delays! Not sure how to get around those problems to explore future travel. Regards. Linda

Hello All!

I'm looking to expand my travel horizons and was considering a solo holiday. I don't mind that at all, done it before. Yet it's so much more economical as two or more, no? ๐Ÿ™‚ So the penny dropped and here I am looking for like minded peeps who might care to share some time away with a lively, intelligent and fit 65 year old interested in travel at home and abroad.

Have a wee look at my profile thingy and that should give you more of an idea.

Do be in touch and thanks!

Laraine

Hi Laraine! I know Mexico isn't on your Bucket List - perhaps you have been there already - but you sound a fun and lively lady and if you are interested in Mexico do get in touch. I note that you are good in a crisis - that might well come in very handy!

John
Response from Laraine50 made on 10th Jan 2016 11:51:56
Hey, John! ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks for posting. I haven't been to Mexico and in truth, I am interested in other places at this point in time.

I would love to hear how you are getting on with your planning though and wish you all the best for a FAB trip.

I plead guilty as charged to being fun and lively though ...

Solo holidays can be expensive, I'm just this once going with my daughter to Lanzarote Easter week. I'm thinking to join Solo holidays for my future plans. Hopefully that will help. I'm 67 in good healt active lady recently widowed, love travels, gardening, enjoys socialising. Best regards

Hi I have been looking at solo holidays but find some are restricted on dates and where they go .Having recently been widowed and never travelled alone before I wouldn't mind finding some one to share a holiday .
Response from Marigold67 made on 12th Feb 2016 14:06:08
Hi lucie
I to have recently been widowed. I find traveling alone boring, no fan at all. Also it's much more expensive. I'm 67 in very good health, love travell mostly from September until February. The weather is not for me, so I like to spend this time of the year, in better climates. I speak Spanish , Serbian. Last year I have been away to serbia for 6 weeks got back went to Spain for 3 weeks, back home, now I'm off to lanzarote Easter week. The last trip is with my daughter. I live in south east Essex .
Best regards
Response from lucie made on 13th Feb 2016 12:53:14
Hi Marigold
Did you holiday alone when you went to Spain?. Nice to see you are going with your daughter to Lanzorote hope you have a great time. I really need to get away but not sure if I have enough confidence to go alone .

hello Loraine,
seems we are on the same boat. I would like to travel , but too lazy to go on my own. Seems booking holiday for one costs almost as much as for two and it is so nice to share bottle of wine instead drinking it all by oneself ๐Ÿ™‚ So far have no plans and am ready to accept any suggestions. I am based in SE London and abroad (50/50)

Response from Lindylootoo made on 21st Jul 2016 10:53:43
Hello Lariane and all.

I've only recently found this forum but would very much like to know if others want to team up on holiday. I'm 63, divorced, fit and active, very sociable, enjoy most live music but not an up-all-night, clubber! Not really a beach lounger person (tho I have my moments) and still work (very) part time. I'm very aware that time waits for no one and am anxious to see as much of the world as I possibly can, so am open to suggestions for most of the world. This year I've been to Kerala, Cyprus, Crete.........and to come Turkey - Gulet and hotel (yikes!), Italy - Ramblers walking holiday. Next year is Cuba - definitely a bucket list destination.
I'm gaining experience of independent travel with every holiday and like most single, independent people, I like my own space - so would hope to have my own room, but am good at negotiating prices, so always hopeful of bargains!

I live on the Isle of Wight, but also want to explore the UK and Ireland.
I'm currently looking at up to three weeks in January 2017 in Sri Lanka or Goa and looking at flights & accommodation at no more than ยฃ1500.

Very interested in hearing from anyone who wants to join me, or interested in meeting up for future holidays.

Good luck to all.

Linda

I am a very young 70 year old widow wanting to travel the US and see the treasures in each state. My children work and grandchildren all are in school so it makes me make this bold move.
I am emotionally and financially sound (not rich ๐Ÿ™‚ but enough to travel in the US. I am a happy, fun and optimist person. Cross country is not fun nor safe alone, so if there is a 65-75 year old adventurer out there like me, I hope you respond to communicate.
Due to the amt of scammers and for safety, a background check will need to be done. And of course if there is no photo there will not be a reply. Why the need to say this is curious.
Hopefully an adventurous person is reading this and wanting to communicate.
I wish you the best in life.
Have a wonderful day, evening or night.

Hi I am leaving London for the USA 3 September, crossing the Atlantic on a container ship and will be in Chester mid Sept. Plan to go to New England for the fall, then Indiana, Chicago then as it will be getting chilly head down to New Orleans stopping off on the way. Will then work my way across to get to Phoenix by mid December where my son lives and I plan on spending xmas. I am a pretty experienced traveller and often travel alone, but would be fun to travel some of this with another person.
I am planning on travelling by Greyhound bus and Amtrak - drop me a line if you think any of this will fit in with your plans and we can talk more

I have a pre-bought Florida resort accommodation package for 4 people to be used before Dec 16th 2016. Best time to go is Oct-Nov. Package can be split and the 4 resorts can be taken separately at different times. Good for family of 4 (extra cost for extra persons) or 2 or 4 friends. Extension of time beyond 16th Dec is at an additional cost. I would either sell whole package of $NZ5000 value for $NZ2000 and change my name to the buyer's, or recruit others to join me, accommodation paid. The package doesn't include any travel or port costs. The resorts need to be date booked soon, similarly flight bookings.

If anyone is interested in responding as a potential companion, please be non-smokers, non-perfumed, reasonably fit, well educated, gentle mannered, honest and trustworthy, friendly, not overpowering or controlling, and willing to compromise if any situation arising requires adjustment. Preferred age group is middle age to 70s. I like classical music, some jazz, good literature, dance, arts, gardening. I would be travelling from New Zealand and would prefer another NZr but could meet at the first resort. Detailed correspondence prior to a final decision would be 'wise'!

Hello,Traveller ๐Ÿ™‚

I think you are spot on. In the absence of any success at finding a travel companion, I think I'll get on and get out.I am cool about travelling alone, but I would have liked to reduce cost. However, I now fancy the idea of a room to myself, my own decisions, my own itinerary.

I went on a group tour of Florence/Tuscany, booked with a friend. She had to drop out owing to illness and really I was very happy to be on my own. Just come back from Marseille/Provence, with a friend and latterly joined his family in a house by the sea. I found it a dreadful strain travelling with someone who had very different ideas of what a relaxed time was about.

So ... thanks for your timely reminder of the sheer peace and pleasure in travelling alone.

Hi! Would anybody like to join me to climb the mythical Mt Olympus? I booked to go to Greece at the end of June. Unfortunately there are no group tours that I can join to do the climb, therefore, I will have to hire a private guide (very expensive) to climb with.. Apparently it can be done without a guide but preferably with some company. Any body interested? I booked with easy jet and I am staying in Litochoro - there are still flights and hotels available. Please contact me for more details.
