KEITH_WL's bio
Happily married, caring for disabled wife who is supportive of the idea that I need an occasional break. We are blessed in having four children, all married and with families.
Am keen on walking in own area (mid Wales) but some travel might be possible. I tend to travel by train though I can drive abroad if need be. If I do then it's fly or by train to the foreign country and hire, not take our own car. -

English GrammarPicking up on MedicineMan's comment about arthritic hands, I have that problem too. I've started experimenting with voice-to-text software. Suggestions on good systems would be welcome.ViewDate:

Is political correctness in our modern society, being taken too far or have we got the balance right? What are your views?I have long been close friends with some former cricketing opponents in the West Midlands who are of West Indian origin. We are totally politically incorrect in the leg-pulling that goes on, with never any offence taken. The PC crowd would be horrified. KeithViewDate:

LonlinessWhat JeanMark says is closely related to a feature of human thought that seems widespread - the assumption that what's going on in somebody else's mind is the same as what is in one's own. If you ask where something is, then the other person might say "there" - as if one knows which "there" it refers to. A similar phenomenon is the idea that "if I can do it then any fool can". NO!!! X-FactorA somewhat different comment occurred to me in a different context tonight. It's about the screamers in audiences. The other context was a Donald Trump speech. There was no discrimination, they screamed in ecstasy every time he uttered a word. Similarly in X-factor the screaming seems to start with every song and continue throughout the song. Do they even listen to it? KeithViewDate:

TemperatureWe have a different policy. It goes on fairly early when the temperature starts to drop, but at a low level. Then we increase it or decrease it as the weather seems to indicate. KeithViewDate:

TRAVELING SOLO AND LOOKING FOR A COMPANION?Just a thought - I have been to one-day meets of a group based on a newsgroup devoted to The Archers. Firm friendships were made because we'd *met* and in safe circumstances. A development of the idea might be to base such meetings on regions to cut down travelling. KeithViewDate:

What do we mean by 'quality of life'?Of course the right response to this is to be appalled on her behalf and yours but I will confess that my *first* response would be to give these people a very hard time indeed! I worked with mental handicap for over thirteen years, my last job. Once the chap I was supporting was taken short and had a personal accident. We were near a local supermarket and I took him into their toilet to clean him up. In his distress he decorated the walls. The manageress was absolutely marvellous. Didn't freak out at all, closed the toilet to the public and offered the services of an employee with nursing experience. She has been on my list of heroes ever since and I would love to have had the chance to tell this to those people. KeithViewDate:

Further to this, do you read science fiction? In the fifth book of Isaac Asimov's Foundation Trilogy (!) it is suggested that the future of the *human* race might be as hermaphrodites! KeithViewDate:

Is political correctness in our modern society, being taken too far or have we got the balance right? What are your views?LOL! Can't resist, JeanMark, what qualities would you hope that a Martian would bring to the job? Actually a serious additional point comes to mind here. Men and women are different animals to some extent. Some jobs will indicate a preference for one sex or the other (or perhaps even a Martian!) KeithViewDate:

Is political correctness in our modern society, being taken too far or have we got the balance right? What are your views?I too am no friend of positive discrimination, which is not the same as encouragement. Two of our children did badly at their first attempt at A-levels (largely due to my bad advice on at least one of their choices). We persuaded them to try again, with one change of subject. Both passed and got good degrees. I would have been horrified if they had been accepted in order to improve the male/female balance in universities. (Which, by the way, has happened without positive discrimination.)ViewDate:

Mary Whitehouse ... - [DELETED_MEMBER]Though she went too far in some ways, HappyStar, I think that's too harsh. She wasn't a witch and I agreed with some of her objections. It was a time of a swing to 'anything goes' and that provoked extreme reactions. I wouldn't support either of the extremes. Martin Luther had a saying that humanity is like a man on a horse who, if he falls of his horse on the righthand side will make certain next time to fall off on the left. I agree with you that in many ways the current extreme is undesirable. I'm the first to argue against political correctness, Health & Safety excesses and the bureaucracy that supports them. I would like to make new friends for general conversation onlyWell Georgie Girl I read your message and sent you a (polite) response but have received no reply from you. Perhaps we should ask why. Messages usually seem to be delivered. It might be a question of time-scale - some people are logged in less frequently than a retired person such as myself. However, yes, I'm afraid that some people are not communicators and do not reply. KeithViewDate:

Artificial PausesNot about pauses, but still on Strictly Come Dancing, two further thoughts:- 1) I expected an announcement last night on Will Young's departure but didn't hear one. Did I blink and miss something or is there an embarrassed cover-up gong on? 2) Does anyone agree that a revision of the scoring system is long overdue. If there are two weak contestants then it's fair to each. If it's a strong one against a weak one then it's not. I'm not against the public vote but its influence seems too strong. (Sorry, I think I made this point before but I've added a point here.) KeithViewDate:

MEMORIESI can tick most of the 'boxes' in TreeHugger1's list and add at least one. I was born in a small town twenty-odd miles from Shrewsbury and had never had an ice cream until the war ended when I was aged five. Then and for some years afterwards Sidoli's van would come round on a Saturday morning. Ice creams were first sold in the own only some time in the 1950s. KeithViewDate:

Lack of interest?Today I attempted to follow up HappyStar's suggestion of reading J P Tate's 'All God Worshipers Are Mad' and Sam Harris' 'Letter To A Christian Nation.' by enquiring at the local library. One wasn't on the records, the other had been but as with many other books had been removed - time-expired or whatever. Both are available on Amazon but do I want to buy books that I shall read only once - I'm trying to declutter? A book you didn't mention that is relevant to the discussion is The Grand Design and the library is getting it in for me. I have a related book - God and Stephen Hawking by Prof. J. C. Lennox. Lack of interest? Then why the provocative title? Note my comment "If an argument is presented in what seems to me an immoderate way". It occurs to me to ask if you in turn plan to read or have read some of the books that oppose your views, in particular the ones in response to Dawkins' book and also to Stephen Hawking's The Grand Design (with Leonard Mlodinow). Lack of interest?I'll take note and probably read them. I intend to get back to you but it won't be soon. Your own comment 'Both writers do a pretty good job of dismantling all religions' is of course just an opinion. Also the very title of the first book gives me little confidence in its objectivity. Lack of interest?Very perceptive comments about the written word, Dollie. It's also true that the online written word is more immediate, perhaps less thought through, than the traditional letter. With the spoken word there's a response at once that gives a chance to retract. The letter is more carefully prepared. Perhaps online communication falls between two stools KeithViewDate:

Lack of interest?Surely there have been several responses to your various posts on religion, or most of them. The number and frequency of these posts raises a question. Many atheists, on coming to the conclusion that there is no God, are content to drop the subject. Others like Richard Dawkins show what I can only call religious zeal in trying to convert others to their point of view and and frequently like Dawkins they go over the top and pepper their arguments with sneers. (I have read The God Delusion and also Alister McGrath's response The Dawkins Delusion.) If an argument is presented in what seems to me an immoderate way then personally I feel pressurised and I know anyway from research findings that raised emotion is destructive to clear thought. There would be little gain from engaging in argument. A quiet discussion, preferably one-to-one (I am not a public debater), is more my style. KeithViewDate:

Grumpy cornerOnce in the late 1970s or even later an old shopkeeper cleaned out his shop prior to retiring. He gave my wife some large tins of corned beef that had lived in some corner since the war. They were given for the dog, who seemed perfectly well a few days on so I tried some. It tasted nice and I had no ill effects.ViewDate:

Artificial PausesTwo further comments:- 1) They really need to do something about the scoring system. Laura and Tameka shouldn't have needed to dance off for at least three weeks. 2) While I'm not a great fan of The Apprentice I do watch it some times. For me it's an order of magnitude more annoying than the worst annoyances of Strictly Come Dancing. The introductory programme was beyond belief. -
