The 60s ... What did like best about the 60s?

Aged 5 -15 in the 60's......I remember it so I wasn't there!

Smell of the coalman delivering sacks of coal, face blackened by soot......The milkman walked the roads with a hand operated electric float......Babies parked outside shops while mums shopped........Bonny Baby contests and Acker Bilk at Bishop's Park in Fulham......

I could go on!......Fabulous days x

As I was born in 1954, I spent the entire 1960s in school. So I missed out on a lot of the iconic "Swinging Sixties" memories (live music, fashion, etc.), but I certainly enjoyed the TV of the era - Gerry Anderson, Dr Who, Hucklebery Hound (and countless others), as well as the comics!

However, I think my main memory directly related to the 1960s is the Weekly Shop - the regular Saturday afternoon outing with my mum (and my dad, if he wasn't at work). Every week would be the same routine: bus into town; then walking the length of the main shopping road, going into certain shops for particular items; then, once we'd completed that part of the expedition, we'd head for the main Market; once there, we'd spend about 10 minutes at Eli's (the local version of Del Trotter, with a fresh supply of goods each week!). Then, another few minutes watching the man on the bone china stall effortlessly juggling complete dinner services.

Then it would be back to the serious business of shopping. The Market had a good number of butchers and fishmongers, and my mum knew exactly which stall to go to for a particular piece of meat or fish. The past Leon's toy stall (sometimes I'd be lucky to get something!) to the Country Stalls, for cheese, cooked meat and preserves. Finally, off to the bus stop and back home in time for Dr Who!

That weekly shop speaks volumes about the difference between the 1960s and the present day. In spite of the distance covered during the shopping trip, and the number of shops visited (not to mention the invariable "chinwag" when my mum met up with someone she knew), everything seemed to happen at a far more leisurely pace back then. Nowadays, the urge is for shoppers to get as much as possible in a single large shop, or do most of the shopping on line. You would think, therefore, that people today would have more time to enjoy life. But sadly this doesn't seem to be the case.

I just love the Music, & fashion of the Swinging 60s although when the 60s started i was still in junior school but as the 60s continued i was a teenager still at school did not have a care in the world we use go to the local park with our radio & practice all the new dance routine's that were coming out singing, & pretending we were in the girl groups that were around & talking about fashion.
We would try all the new hair styles, Loads of back combing & Belle Air Lacquer, & if you did not have any lacquer you would always use sugar & water.

The music we listened to was The Beatles, Tamla, Rock, etc the days never seemed to end happy & care free.

I still love the fashion, ( al though the mini skirt is a no go for me now age & weight are against me ) but i do love the hippy fashion & flower power, colours.. & music of the 60s & i would of loved to gone to Woodstock.

It's got to be the music. Having just had a.liver transplant and locked in at home during covid I decided to see if I could use the internet to collect as many 60's music tracks as posdible . I concentrate on the British groups and
and singers but I also love the early 60's girl groups like the Ronnettes, Crystals, Shirelles and Supremes. I've now collected every single Beatles. track I can lay my hands on including bootlegs and out takes and every single recording the Stones have made. If you search the internet carefully you can usually get them for only a couple of pounds. Music Magpie is a great place to look. I've now collected the greatest hits albums of nearly every single 60's artist except for the sad singers like Ken.Dodd, Englebert Humperstink . Des. O'Conner and all those middle of the road warbblers. My wife and I also go to as many sixties music weekends at places like Butlins and Pontins as we can. Love the Searchers live. It's a shame that they've now packed it in. Had booked to go to the one at Butins in January but it's now been cancelled due to covid. I

I used to love going to the local disco. In the 60s it was filled with smoke so thick you could hardly see.

I was only in my early teens in the 60s but absolutely loved the music and even the fashion. I had a smelly Afghan coat that as my dad just to say to me made me smell like the dog! He used to say "you will never get any girlfriends smelling like our dog my boy" he was right!!!!

I left school when I was 15 yrs...1960,started my first job the following week, it was the best time ever to be a teenager, the music was great, dancing at the weekend, ...I wouldn't like to be a teenager now

The best thing about the sixties is the Music, also there were plenty of jobs. Mods and Rockers were about, mini skirts such a good time to be a teenager.

To me, the best thing about the 60s is that I was 50 years younger than I am now. LOL

We were starting our family in the 60's, 3 children under 4, Exhausting but very happy years, even though we did not have much money.

I was a teenager in the sixties and have to say it was the best time of my life. I just wish kids of today could know the great times we had as youngsters.

Life before my 15th birthday was beset with physical abuse under the guise of upbringing, little in the way of education, low expectation of social guidance and a total lack of parental affection. Subsequently my entry into the military at that tender age was the gateway to freedom, discipline, comradeship, travel, education and social inter-relationship. By the end of the decade, I had formed friendships, relationships and a determination to learn all that I could about the World, it's peoples, their cultures, faiths and histories. Now in my dotage, I realise that most of what I achieved in life was founded in that glorious era of great music, free love, and tolerance, and little of significance was influential thereafter.

Hi, I'm new here! I loved the 60's - I was 10 in '68. I have 2 older brothers who were big musical influences for me, & I've been a Beatles freak since I can remember. I got to see Paul at Penn State University last year & it was beyond wonderful! I love the music of that time (from folk to rock) the atmosphere (minus racism & sexism) the look & the feel of clothes, hair, etc. That's where I go when I need to escape to a "happy place".

Riding Vespa scooter with my boyfriend - scooter had chrome bubbles and wing mirrors real foxes tail from road kill -more chrome the better just like Quadrophenia wore my split back parka -drinking every Saturday jn Brighton at Druids Head -Sussex-and Greyhound-I still possess my bright red patent jacket I wore on scooter its in perfect condition and still fits after 5O years ........
