Just joined so I'm introducing myself.

I will be 67 next month and retired from the many different jobs in my working life. I guess that I didn’t ever find my calling. I went to university at age 59 but when it was over it was too late to launch a new career. I wanted to lecture but students don’t want to listen to old fogies, so sadly I put aside that idea and settled into life as an eccentric dog owner.

I live in a beautiful Lancashire valley surrounded by hills that demand they be walked/climbed, how could I refuse?

I would like to do a bit of cycle touring but a recent diagnosis of spondylosis and some hip pain means that I may not be doing a world tour anytime soon!

I’m keen to make some friends as I have been on my own for a very long time now, my daughters don’t bother much with me and I don’t have a partner.I didn’t expect to be so isolated at this time in my life, isn’t it strange the way family and friends seem to forget us when we get past 60?

I will pop in regularly and hope to strike up some friendships.

Well, the nickname certainly does strike up a conversation. If the Celt does not want to chat then please feel free to chat with SeaStar. If not at least you are not holding up an obscene sign as you pass by the window. All is said in jest...Hope life goes well with you.

Formerly DS and now a recent joiner to the forums but have to say I'm not getting on to well with the methods of lay out or posting. Probably my fault as not entirely computer literate.

Hi

I was born in UK Leicestershire, came to South Africa to work in the health service, several positions later I have just retired. I am married, due to my husband's high Covid risk we are isolating as far as possible. We live on a small plot, in rural area of national beauty, so lucky, Our son lives in the cottage on the property,

I have family in UK, and maintain contact via face book, but by the nature of things it is difficult to be close. I belong to a nursing group and a group watching our corruption commission, sounds boring but varies between comedy, horror and insult.

I am looking for friends to chat to over a virtual coffee and cake. my hobbies are cooking, gardening, I have times of cross stitch, knitting and embroidery then the urge passes. We have 4 dogs all rescues, keep chickens and lone survivalist duck.

That is a bit about me and mine I look forward to chats and learning about others in the groups

Hi Jenny1812.
I'm interested that you live in South Africa. I spent nearly 5 years in Rhodesia as it was in the 1950's, but always I have retained a love of Africa .Married less than a year my husband could not settle back in the UK after the war.

Apartheid and the worsening unrest finally drove us back to the UK. I will never forget the 4 day train journey from Cape Town to Bulawayo on the school train as we missed the Blue train by a few hours when we came off the ship!

I missed the space and the wildlife of Africa and now live in rural Wales.
Somewhere in SA I have an adopted niece, but we lost touch. I would be interested to know what part you live in, and how things might have changed in day to day living?
Response from Jenny1812 made on 18th Mar 2021 07:10:59 > @PurpleHat
Hi Purplehat,

I live in Magaliesburg on the Gauteng /NW province border. This is known as the cradle of humankind as the caves here have given the earliest humanoid bones. It is also a biospere means an area of national biodiversity. So we are very lucky

We came to SA in 1982 to help with the opening of the new JHB hospital, have watched the move from apartheid to democracy. All was well until the corruption which appears to bedevil each African country at so stage. The country is learning the results of state capture and theft in a commission. Even ANC leaders are being brought to court, so with luck we are passing through that stage.

I worked in several hospitals both public and private, with a spell overseas in Saudi before setting up a low cost clinic with a local pharmacy. ( Nurses, with extra qualifications, are allowed to diagnose and treat here, referring to GPs and hospitals as required).

Day to day is very quiet now Covid regs. stopped me working as over 70s can't work. So I passed the clinic on. May go back once vaccination is complete, we are in the second group which if enough vaccine can be bought will be in May. We have a home with enough land for vegetables, a few chickens.and a few fruit trees The fruit trees feed more of the local bird life than us I enjoy cooking, jam making and preserving. My husband does web designing he taught himself after retiring from radiography.

That's quite enough about us, would like to hear about you and yours. Where do you live? What is your life like?

I

Hi Jennie1812

That is an interesting area to live in, I saw a documentary a while ago of The Origins of Man, and I remember about those early bones! The part of Wales where I live now is also a designated Geopark, a region of natural beauty and geological interest with many enormous cave systems only partly explored, and waterfalls on the rivers which powered many industries in times past.

I live with my daughter and her Welsh husband after 4 years alone since my husband passed away. we share a former old plain stone farmhouse on the edge of moorland with sheep in the next door field. My daughter has some ponies, and we have 2 dogs. I garden a bit, potter in my greenhouse and paint a bit from my own photos, and generally help out. I like to be outside when I can, as I love the space. I have been lucky to have that option in these times.

We have all had our first jabs, so we are hoping for more freedom to move about soon.
If you would like to chat some more we could move over to Chat. I will will put a message there as well.
Best Wishes

Good Morning from Georgia Kelly,

How are you doing this weekend? I have been to England and many other cities in the UK for business and vacation many times in the past.

I hope we get to communicate more before my next trip after this global restriction has ended.

God bless you my dear.

Best Wishes,

Hi Celtwitch,
I've just joined, having been thinking for some time about expanding my friendship circle in a completely different direction. Wey hey! Done it!

Your 'post' caught my eye. I live in rural Buckinghamshire surrounded by fields.

I was walking today with a friend. We did about 5 miles and in the past that would have set off my hip but I've been doing a lot of exercise during lockdown - (which has kept me going the last few months as I've been feeling in need of .... something..... ) and my pain has essentially gone, by strengthening and stretching muscles around hips and lower back. And stomach. And shoulders. It gets me everywhere - thankfully! So I'm feeling stronger and fitter at 66, than I have for a while. Wanting to do more short walks and seeking new friends to chat with along the way.

Re. cycling - well, I have a bike and I bought a go faster cycling helmet recently. I've been out twice, the second time I sort of collapsed at the very end of 12 miles into a shrub while trying to get off - exhausted. Now contemplating an electric bike. Being a bit of a procrastinator though that won't happen any time soon. And I do so love my car.

I've all sorts of other interests plus I'm a bit of a radio 4 wall to wall listener when not out in the garden. It's late and I've just heard Jane Garvey - ex-womans hour - in another slot which is pleasing.

I've no idea how this all works. I guess this is all public to members who are signed in?

If anyone feels like contacting me ? - also ?

Good Morning to you celtwitch,

Greetings to you from Georgia, United States of America. I am 65 and will be 66 soon. I have been to London and several other cities in the UK. Bristol, York, Leicester,Birmingham,Cambridge, etc.

I lost my only daughter wife on the same day in 2018. That was the hardest year in my life. But I have a grand son. His name is Rickey. He's my buddy. He lives with his dad and grand mother. Not very far from me. I used to live in Texas. But after the death of my wife and daughter, I had to move back to Georgia where my wife and I have our home we bought here during the early 80s. Now I am more closer to my grand son.
Have you ever been to the United States before?
I would like us make contact and get to communicate better and hopefully become friends.

I hope your weekend has been a great one and that this week started off with you better.
Please write back when ever you can.

Blessings to you!
David

Hi All
My name is Suzanne Hughes ( nee Mason). I now live in Brisbane Australia.I have tried for a long time to locate a very old friend of mine from Barry Glamorgan. Her name is Diane Peacock. I think her married name could be" Baker". She is the sister of Stuart Peacock MBE. who as far as we know still lives in Barry .If anybody knows her whereabouts I would be much appreciated.
Kind regards Suzanne

Hi everyone...just joined the site so not sure what I'm doing.
I'm 64 and I live in The Peak District.
I'm a semi retired psychotherapist and to be honest I'm a bit lonely so talking and chatting would be good.
Like the original poster says it's a bit of a surprise how you suddenly realise you have become isolated.
Anyhoo...here goes
