Just joined so I'm introducing myself.

I will be 67 next month and retired from the many different jobs in my working life. I guess that I didn’t ever find my calling. I went to university at age 59 but when it was over it was too late to launch a new career. I wanted to lecture but students don’t want to listen to old fogies, so sadly I put aside that idea and settled into life as an eccentric dog owner.

I live in a beautiful Lancashire valley surrounded by hills that demand they be walked/climbed, how could I refuse?

I would like to do a bit of cycle touring but a recent diagnosis of spondylosis and some hip pain means that I may not be doing a world tour anytime soon!

I’m keen to make some friends as I have been on my own for a very long time now, my daughters don’t bother much with me and I don’t have a partner.I didn’t expect to be so isolated at this time in my life, isn’t it strange the way family and friends seem to forget us when we get past 60?

I will pop in regularly and hope to strike up some friendships.

Hello everyone. Just joined yesterday and still feeling my way around. My family keeps telling me this is my time, and I'm free to re-invent myself, but where to start? I was married for over 35 years. I have 3 daughters and 5 grands. I am on my own, but not by choice. My husband left me for a newer model. My ego and self esteem have taken quite a bruising, but I'm surviving. I'm ready to make new friends, talk with new people.
I love cooking, reading, knitting, photography, and spending time with my grandchildren. I have a sassy little Min Pin named Mika who is the boss at my house, or so she thinks.
The local university has a Lifelong Learning Program that offers a variety of classes for seniors in the spring and fall which I have enjoyed. I would love to find people just to chat with, nothing too deep, just friendly conversation.

Welcome PackGrl, there are plenty of interesting people on this site to chat to, so enjoy the experience.

Thanks for the welcome. Looking forward to chatting with anyone. My name is Linda and I'm a Southern lady in the USA.

Hi PackGrl, welcome to the site. Have been through the same experience myself so my mantra is " Your value doesn't decrease based on someone's inability to see your worth". I should have this tattooed somewhere (!) but have got it stuck on my PC screen instead - less painful .......... and cheaper!!!! You will survive and there are lots of friendly people on the site with some interesting topics in the forums.
Response from PackGrl made on 11th Jan 2017 14:08:51
Thank you for the words of encouragement. My name is Linda and would love to hear more from you

Absolutely! You have got fabulous beaches and castles up there in Northumberland - further north than Yarm but in the vicinity.
Response from TerryO made on 8th Jan 2017 22:36:21
We have the North Yorks Moors on our doorstep, the Yorkshire Dales, Whitby, Durham City and some stunningly beautiful countryside. I live in what would have been County Durham but being on the banks of the Tees I look across to Yorkshire. It's a really lovely place to live
Response from CaroleAH made on 11th Jan 2017 13:54:28
Just started to reply to this and my response has disappeared into the ether before I had finished it! So .......... as I was saying, I've just looked at Wikipedia and Yarm isn't where I had thought it was i.e. in Co Durham so TerryO you definitely do live in God's Own County of Yorkshire but have the advantages of living near to Durham and a beautiful part of the coastline. I'm buried deep in the southern part of North Yorkshire, having a Leeds postcode but pay my council tax to Selby. All very odd but no doubt it makes sense to some local "town hall" bureaucrat! Have spent half the morning picking up litter from all the recycling boxes which have been blown over in the high winds and the other half Singing for Fun with my local U3A so now warm soup beckons.
Response from TerryO made on 11th Jan 2017 14:04:35
We are in a similar state of confusion I officially live in Eaglescliffe because I am on the north bank of the Tees. However both Yarm and Eaglescliffe have a postal address which is Stockton on Tees Cleveland even though Cleveland County has not existed for about 15 years. We have a Teesside Postmark but Teesside disappeared before Cleveland. Currently the 5 local; boroughs work together under the banner of TeesValley but again this has never been officially designated as our address. You really couldn't make this up!!!. You are right however the Tees was the old boundary between Co Durham and Yorkshire so in the old days even though Yarm is my local town I would have been living in Co Durham and waving to my neighbours across the river in Yorkshire

Hi everybody,
Just joined SS this morning - it seemed like a good idea when I suddenly saw it on Facebook!
Nudging 70 ( how can that be - doesn't seem possible??!!) Retired last year from a PA job and have enjoyed spending more time at home in West Sussex with my gorgeous cat who is now 17. I adore cats and used to have five, and was PR Officer for a local cat rescue charity for some years. I love music (the modern kind). I apparently have a good sense of humour (?!) and enjoy meeting friends for coffee/lunch/tea & cake/dinner (but not all on the same day) and so far haven't really needed to look for a hobby, apart from playing Scrabble on line, as I've been fairly busy doing the above!
Well, that's me. Nice to meet you!

Hi,
Not so new to this , I was a member many many years ago but due to finances i had to leave coz I could not afford membership fees at the time, which was sad because I was chatting to some lovely people.
So now I am back but things are looking very different and a bit uncertain on how to navigate through the site.... guess its only a matter of time 🙂
PS does anyone know how to add your pic to the profile?

Welcome Casahanney, wow you sound brave, well done you. How nice to live in Spain, which part?
Response from Casahanney made on 5th Jan 2017 18:07:52
Brave or daft not sure. I just want to get out and about and see more of Spain. I live in the mountains of the costa Blanca. Inland an hour or so from Benidorm.

Very cold in winter lovely and sunny in summer. We get the 4 seasons here.

Thank you for your welcome x
Response from Georgie Girl made on 5th Jan 2017 22:33:28
Ah Benidorm, we will be there in a few days, how is the weather right now? Not sure up in the mountains would hold an appeal for me but of course everyone is different, do you have family living with or near you. Any recommendations on interesting places to visit, we heard Altea was quite pleasant.
Response from Casahanney made on 6th Jan 2017 06:51:20
Weather is awaits good in Benidorm. Here we have frosty mornings but warm sunny days. With beautiful clear blue sky. No, no family I have three sons married and all live in South Wales. I visit them a few times a year. Having lived here for 18 years, this is now my life and I wouldn't change it.

Yes, Altea is lovely, in fact I am going there for a couple of days next week. A little r and r after all the festivities.

Have fun. Yx
Response from Georgie Girl made on 6th Jan 2017 11:17:46

Hello all, I've joined a couple of weeks ago but only got round this, I "spoke" with someone yesterday but I have lost that thread.
A little bit about me, I am 65, male. Married 43 years soon. I was born in Scotland but have lived in England since 1972. Hobbies are my fishpond, 2 greenhouses, I enjoy growing cacti and love it when they flower. We have 2 daughters, 3 grandkids.
Enjoy a beer, due to health reasons, not to many I have a jack Russell cross who I take out most days.
Thanks for reading this, if you have, and I look forward to chatting with you.

Hi Lionel, good to meet you, I wondered about the male/female ratio. I am not an accomplished gardener by a long shot, I use to work for British Gas, in the early days I was digging trenches to put new gas pipes/mains in. I done my fair share of digging at work so didn't do it at home. I have my fish pond, nice to sit out on a warm evening listening to the water, that area gets the sun very nicely that time of day. The other part of the garden is paved and I have some planters etc dotted round the place.

Bella, my Jack Russell crossed with a wire haired Terrier, was 9 years old a couple of weeks ago, she's a monkey, but great company good with the grandkids, and she keeps us on our toes. Given half a chance she would be a great ratter.

Sorry to hear your wife is poorly, but good to know the dogs look after her.

Anyway Lionel it's bedtime for me, but I'll look out for you and carry on our chat.

Look after yourself.
Cactus.
Response from Cactus14 made on 16th Dec 2016 20:44:31
Hi Lionel, don't apologise about replying, I'm not on everyday so reply when you feel up to it, and I will do the same within a couple of days. I'm not long back from town, which is Derby, I met a few mates of mine a we had 2 or 3 drinks for Xmas, me being the sensible one left after 3. It was good just to meet. I'm out again tomorrow night for a meal with some other friends. It's that time of the year eh.

Sorry to hear about your fish, it's heart breaking when something like that happens, luckily most of my fish were "gifted" to me, I was like the rspca to fish, somebody's pond sprung a leak, so they would bring their fish, someone else's lads goldfish had outgrown the fish bowl etc, etc. I have about 25 fish at the moment from koi through to goldfish. Hope your new stocks goes on ok..

Right I'm going for a cuppa, get back to me when you're ready.

All the best Lionel

Cactus.
Response from Cactus14 made on 30th Dec 2016 20:58:23
Hi Lionel, just a quick note, I have lost my last couple of chats with you, again, I'm hopeless with technology, I will gather myself over the new year and get back to you next week.

We are still suffering with chest infection and bronchitis, so a quiet new year for us.

All the best to you both and I hope you have a great new year.

Speak soon

Hello everyone, My name is Brenda, I am 56 years old, I live SC and am very confused how I should be dressing age appropriate, I'm very slender and still have shop in the juniors department, I look young for my age but I want to be appropriate and not look like I'm trying to hang on to my youth, I sure could use some advice and guidence.
Response from jeanmark made on 30th Dec 2016 18:45:24
56 is hardly old and I think you should wear what you feel comfortable in and not worry about what other people think. The days of 'mutton and lamb' have passed, other than in the thoughts of small minded people. Most fashions these days are suitable for all ages so I wouldn't worry, particularly if you remain small and can wear size 8's. At least now you can shop in mainstream departments rather than having to stick to junior departments.

Hi I live north of Bristol, about 20 minutes by car. I am a , sort of, young 69 and work full time so cannot get out during the day and get involved in local groups, which leaves me getting lazy and alone.
I am pretty well traveled, like good music and good food.
I have made a few errors of judgement in my younger days, but don't regret them as I feel I have lived life to the full. Thing is, I hope there's a long way to go yet and would love to share some of it with someone.
Peter
Response from peterinth made on 29th Dec 2016 11:47:42
Hi LittleMinx. I love Thai food and can cook a little bit of it too. I shop every month at a Chinese supermarket in Bristol called Wai Yee Hong, spend far too much money, but then I'm an impulsive shopper.
I have lived here near Bristol for the past 5 years having lived and worked in Thailand for 15 Years before that and originally from south London.
Now you've started me off, my life history, should have been a writer (horror).
Bye for now.
Response from peterinth made on 30th Dec 2016 10:49:01
Ahh Thailand. The land of smiles.
Go as a tourist and visit all the tourist spots, then go around again under your own steam. Taxis are cheap (make sure you have an idea how much it will cost first and don't barter with the driver, just close the door politely and wave down another taxi).
Eat from the stalls that are busy, where you have to queue. Things to 'must eat' are:
Spicy prawn soup (tom yang goong), sliced chicken with rice and cucumber + soup and a small serving of spicy sauce (cow mon gai) and rice with fried minced pork with green beans and a fried egg on top. (capow moo sap lagore kai dow).
The list is endless.
I'm off now 'cause I'm hungry.
