Just joined so I'm introducing myself.

I will be 67 next month and retired from the many different jobs in my working life. I guess that I didn’t ever find my calling. I went to university at age 59 but when it was over it was too late to launch a new career. I wanted to lecture but students don’t want to listen to old fogies, so sadly I put aside that idea and settled into life as an eccentric dog owner.

I live in a beautiful Lancashire valley surrounded by hills that demand they be walked/climbed, how could I refuse?

I would like to do a bit of cycle touring but a recent diagnosis of spondylosis and some hip pain means that I may not be doing a world tour anytime soon!

I’m keen to make some friends as I have been on my own for a very long time now, my daughters don’t bother much with me and I don’t have a partner.I didn’t expect to be so isolated at this time in my life, isn’t it strange the way family and friends seem to forget us when we get past 60?

I will pop in regularly and hope to strike up some friendships.

Thought I would give SilverSurfers a go, double check how friendly people are as I have been disappointed with other forums sites with how rude and inconsiderate some folk can be.

Living in Swindon Wiltshire but originally from Birmingham.

Still no more negatives lets see whats of interest here, looks impressive so far.

PS/ I don't always wear a Santas hat ( Only Christmas )

Hi, I've just joined, a good friend told me about Silversurfers. I'm 65 (on Saturday) and have two sons who haven't lived at home for many years, they are 41 and 45. I'm a widow, my husband died last year from an Alzheimer's related illness. He'd been in a nursing home for 10 years but had the disease for 16 years. I'm from Yorkshire (Dad was a Lancastrian, Mum a Yorkshire lass) and have lived in Hertfordshire and am now in Cambridgeshire. I like reading, family research and I (try to) go to the gym three times a week. I've been retired for three years and love it.....

Hello I am a widow from the west country. I am a retired lecturer in horticulture and would like to chat with like minded people
Response from CaroleAH made on 11th Aug 2017 10:51:29
Hi Scully, welcome to Silversurfers. I'm sure that you will find lots of interesting topics which you can join in with and no doubt gardeners will have zoomed in on your previous occupation and will be asking you all kinds of questions - as I am about to do! I have got a patch of ground elder in my garden which seems to thrive in spite of having its leaves painted with neat Roundup. Any suggestions as to how I can eradicate it?

I've just joined, looking for people to chat to and share comments with. I'm an "Alzheimer's" widow. My husband has been in care for 7 years and so I'm on my own, apart from my wonderful black labrador!
I love most sports and am interested in world affairs and just want to share thoughts with others of my age group. I'm a fit 70, I swim regularly and walk Sam, my dog, twice a day. I love the walks on my local downs and keep meaning to study cloud structure! I am learning the piano which is very challenging and enjoyable. My career was in computer programming and I have 3 great children. Enough of me!
Response from stvmonark made on 11th Aug 2017 04:12:48
Well things will get better for you, as time goes by, I'm in Australia Sunshine Coast live near the water, which I love.
You hang in there and all will be good.

I've just joined today. I live in Chatham, Kent and currently work as a Sales Assistant. I am also carer to my Mother.

I only turned 50 this year and found out about the Silversurfers on my Facebook feed because my sister follows the Silversurfers FB page. When I saw the feed I thought I was too young to join then saw that it's for the over 50's so joined!

Hi Shy lady,
Welcome to the site....not much of a "joiner" myself but I've heard that U3A is very good for meeting like minded people and taking up new interests.
When I moved to a new area 4 years ago I began volunteering at a local charity shop, you'd be surprised at the number of people Who now recognise me and stop for a chat!

Hi would love to chat, I live in Yorkshire, recently separated, divorce is going through, its very hard at times I'm 60. So no spring chicken, do a lot of walking, yoga, meditation. Getting used to being alone, Though at times it's so hard, I'm lonely try to get out as much as possible.
Response from georgesmum made on 23rd Jul 2017 15:28:18
Hi Kirsty,
Welcome to the site. I can promise you that there is a light at the end of what may seem a very long tunnel. I've been on my own for 19 years and found that once I'd got over the first couple of years I picked up the pieces and went from strength to strength. It may not seem possible at the moment but I'm sure you will do the same!
Response from Toni1 made on 7th Aug 2017 19:26:08
Hi ladies.
I to like yoga and walking.
I am thinking about moving on. Crazy when i have a loving husband and a first grandchild on the way.
I always wanted a flat of my own but have been married for 40 year's so my head is in turmoil really.
I am sure i am just a selfish person.
I hope you are feeling less lonely? Happy to listen.

Hello, I'm 57 and live in the East of England. To be honest, I am not retired yet. I still have a busy day job, also have husband and kids at home, but I have no female friends outside work and can see retirement looming, so would like to get to know some other women in my position.
Response from Toni1 made on 7th Aug 2017 19:19:46
Hi Thundercat. I also work every day. No children at home. Just here really to chat about thoughts and ideas that is better to chat with a stranger. That sounds odd, but nothing odd just kind of ' what would you do' anyway. Hope your day has been good? If you answer i am not sure how i will see it?
All the best.

Hi celtwitch. I too am retired and wondering what to do. I retired as a schoolteacher and did feel I was getting too old for the job. I took a college class this summer but I am not sure if I want to continue. I would love to study languages--French and Spanish but have not started that yet. I just do not know what to do with myself yet.
Response from georgesmum made on 23rd Jul 2017 15:04:55
Hi Mona, It sounds as if you're newly retired and it can feel a bit daunting at first when you are so used to filling your days with work...but give it time and you will soon find your "niche "
Enjoy your new life!
