Just joined so I'm introducing myself.

I will be 67 next month and retired from the many different jobs in my working life. I guess that I didn’t ever find my calling. I went to university at age 59 but when it was over it was too late to launch a new career. I wanted to lecture but students don’t want to listen to old fogies, so sadly I put aside that idea and settled into life as an eccentric dog owner.

I live in a beautiful Lancashire valley surrounded by hills that demand they be walked/climbed, how could I refuse?

I would like to do a bit of cycle touring but a recent diagnosis of spondylosis and some hip pain means that I may not be doing a world tour anytime soon!

I’m keen to make some friends as I have been on my own for a very long time now, my daughters don’t bother much with me and I don’t have a partner.I didn’t expect to be so isolated at this time in my life, isn’t it strange the way family and friends seem to forget us when we get past 60?

I will pop in regularly and hope to strike up some friendships.

Hi,
I am also working. Just helping out in the local Holland and Barrett shop to cover staff who are self isolating. Not very challenging but at least it gets me out of the 4 walls - before taking the job I was 19 hours a day with no one at all to talk to live, then 5 hours of trying to sleep.
Your doggie looks cute.

I will be turning 67 in a couple of days and it would be nice to find a friend to talk to. I've been alone for many years and I'm not looking for any kind of dating relationship. I am looking for someone in their sixties, preferably a female, who maybe in a similar situation. My family does not live around me and this stay home order has really made life lonelier than usual. I've been disabled since my early forties and it would be nice to be able to talk to someone who is also coping with growing old.

Hi Christine I’m new on the forum bit older than you. 75. We live in a village in Wiltshire, and have been isolating ourselves as much as possible , Usually in the summer months we go to Portugal for a n extended holiday with my daughter and husband , we have 2 daughters one lives in Portugal the other one in Coventry . I don’t have any real hobbies used to knit but not lately , not very good at it but l like gardening when my body feels up to it as you mentioned getting used to growing old. Stay safe. Carolyn x

Hello Christine249,
I am fortunate here in my home with a sweet daughter and two grandchildren. If I want to mingle, I do. If not, I stay in my large room where I can read, do genealogy, watch TV, draw, knit, or finally learn to play my guitar!
Because I have so many interests I was never bored when we were under lockdown orders.

Yes, eventually all of us must cope with growing older, and the actress Bette Davis was wise to say. “Growing old isn’t for sissies.”
You look to the past to enjoy fond memories and look to the present to do those things that could or will bring you joy. You find joy by “doing,” and reaching out on this site for friendship is a positive action. I hope you make good friends on Silversurfers!

Hello Celtwitch, I too have had quite a number of jobs and began my college days later in life at 33. I earned a professional teaching certificate but never held long term positions because I had the good fortune to travel instead.

I designed and help build three homes, the last one being my favorite. As a single woman, I dreamed that one up on my own!

I have one daughter and two grandchildren. Who knew being a grandmother could be so much fun as well as educational!

I enjoy making friends, travel, reading, genealogy, art, writing , movies, and more.

Well, that’s about all for now. Enjoy this beautiful day!

Not really suffering if you have a roof over your head, are warm, well fed, books to read and music to listen to etc.
Think of it as time out and see what new activities you can do. Be thankful for what you have right now 🙂

Hello,
I was sitting outside looking at the beautiful sunshine, and looking at the very little flower stems beginning to poke through the dirt in my pots. I planted my flower seeds the day before we were all put into lockdown. Looking down at the tiny sprouts made me realize that just like those flowers that are struggling to grow and get out from under the darkness, we will also be coming out of this soon. Oh how wonderful it will feel to hug someone again!!!
Response from islandPat made on 22nd Apr 2020 08:58:20 > @Debbie4
You are soooo right. Tomorrow is another day and at this time of the year so much changes everyday. It's Earth Day today. When you work out how few days we will be restricted compared to how many days we have lived it puts it in perspective.

At five I had a cough that doc said was a summer cough. I went from the doc's to my grandma's and my aunt was there with my 2 cousins aged 2 yrs and 6 months. I coughed once there apparently - my sister and both cousins were infected with my whooping cough. I was the most seriously ill, the others only had a mild version. It was 16 weeks before I returned to school. I learnt my lesson very young.

Don't fret find something new to interest you, my school, bless them :(, sent me lots of reading and maths to do.

I go to this site to see if there's any free courses that interest me, it's run by Open University. Lots of different subjects, just scroll down to the one that interests you. I love history and literature. They also have a genealogy course which is my main hobby. It's called Future Learn if you want to find out about it before linking to it.

https://www.futurelearn.com/courses

Each day that goes past is a day nearer restrictions being lifted 🙂

Pat 🙂

Hi, I also think it would be wonderful to hug someone again, My divorce has just gone through after a very stressful three years, but I'm very grateful I have managed to keep the property. During that time I've managed to increase my circle of friends and have joined lots of things including the local pantomime group! Unfortunately my daughter and grand daughter live abroad so I only see them infrequently. I think life will be very different when we come out of this and people will appreciate what they have rather than what they would like.

Hello chasinSunshine,

I too am new (a few days), it's nice to meet you. It sounds idyllic where you live.

Being alone at this age is definitely not what I imagined when I was younger (will be 60 this year). I live alone now, have 2 sons, thankfully I do see them (well when not in lockdown) and grandchildren, my Mum, Brother, etc.

I actually love being free and single, that's not say it would be lovely to have someone to share your thoughts and day with but not 24/7 haha. I don't think I could go down that road again. When my life went topsy turvy, I learned to love myself, my own company (even though sometimes I was trying to convince myself, but it worked lol).
Response from lovinlife2016 made on 24th Apr 2020 07:32:21 > @CubaLove
Hi CubaLove,

I'm a carefree person who enjoy being alone. I'm my own best friend who like sharing thoughts, ideas and fun times.

My family live in different states so the next best thing to being there is video chatting.

I hear lots of people say they're bored being locked down, not me. I create activities to keep myself occupied and happy. Although I am thinking of finding someone to play online games with.

I'm 63 and feel it to a point I have to laugh when something new creeps up today that wasn't there yesterday.

Live for your dreams and not the expectations and opinions of others.

Hi cubalove

I normally live on my own but at the moment I have my son and his partner and their 5 year old son staying with me because of this virus. They normally live in London but it is safer for them to stay with me in Kent, quite frankly they are driving me crazy at the moment but its for the good.As far as travel and holiday destinations I hadn't travelled much due to the fact my late wife's health over the years and caring for her we never really had the chance to go anywhere.
Hopefully when this situation changes I have promised myself to go for it..

Hello celtwitch,

Sorry to hear about your health issues.

You may need to go somewhere hot to cycle, I think it will be better for your body with the heat of the sun.

I don't think our Sons, Daughters forget about us, it's just that daily life when you are a certain age is taken up with running a home, family, job etc.

I think once you make some friends and start living your life, you will make your life busy that you won't be able to fit your family in lol.

I too am on my own (have Sons, grandchildren, Mum, Brother etc.) but I joined a group near me who go out a lot. I like to go out sometimes with them (all on hold right now though) I couldn't keep up with them going out all the time.

Look forward to chatting.

Hello everybody,

I've just joined. What a great site it seems to be so far.
I went on-line to look for a pen pal site really as I love writing letters, using a fountain pen.
I will be 60 in July. I have great family and friends. I work 10 hours a week, working from home, thank goodness too, otherwise I might drive myself mad with the isolating situation.

I have google earth on my phone so when I want to go travelling (armchair travel that is!) I just put in a country I want to visit and off I go.

Lovely to meet you all.

Hello Wilf,

Thank you for responding, this is exciting.
I cycled 315km in Cuba in 2015 with the Cuba Solidarity Campaign it was a bit less than 2 weeks. I absolutely love it there. I definitely want to go back one day, maybe not to cycle - I'm not the fittest person. The people are just amazing.

Sorry it's taken me so long to write back, I couldn't find my way around the website, I had a senior moment lol.
Response from CubaLove made on 21st Apr 2020 18:28:44 > @Mo2311
Hello MO2311,

If you want a different experience, you want to work the land with the local people, or cycle and visit schools and hospitals, the Cuba Solidarity Campaign organise these trips.

You can also just book a holiday through a travel agent but as I am not one for just lazing on the beach, cycling for 315km (if you can't keep up, you go on the coach, which I did quite a bit), suited me more.

Hya yes it is lonely being on our own
I’m lucky as I have my dog prince
So a bit easier
It’s great to chat on here
As it gives you good ideas
Like writing down
Things to do when you can go out .
Sitting having a coffee
Just out shower , clean pjs on
As pointless wearing clothes
As my back garden is fenced in
Just lady neighbour next door
Who it’s good to ask how she is .
I’m also a great reader so that is
Time consuming for me
Hope you are ok

Hello,

I too have a dog of the Heinz variety. She walked into our house as a tiny pup, we think abandoned in our village, no one claimed here and that was nearly 5 yrs ago.

I live in Cyprus and our lock down is even more strict than UK. Curfew 9 pm - 6 am and have to send SMS with the appropriate code from a list (with only 8 reasons) to be allowed out once a day. SMS answered straight away - it doesn't cost to send or receive it, the time is on it and you have 3 hrs to complete your trip. All shops except food and medical closed, car repair and tyre places open, some banks open, limited service buses running. Pub, clubs restaurants closed but you can get pizzas as we've seen a delivery guy go passed here. Dog walking is exempt from asking permission and allowed out more than once a day but you can only travel 950 metres from home with the dog. You have to have an ID card or passport with you at all times. Travelling for medical reasons also exempt.

There are a few planes arriving, they are repatriating people who live here and taking away people stranded here. All new arrivals have to go into 14 days isolation, the empty hotels have been used for this purpose.

I keep myself busy walking the dog twice a day, reading, housework (as little as possible only 2 of us plus the dog here), going up my tree (family history) and a little bit of cooking.

Pat 🙂
Response from islandPat made on 18th Apr 2020 12:34:56
Hello from Cyprus.

We too have a dog - a Heinz variety called Priya. She's blonde with lots of lab and pointer in her but there's a smaller dog in her genes as she's not the size of a lab or pointer. We think she was abandoned in our village as no one claimed her after she walked into our house late one evening, she was only a few weeks old, She's been with us over 4 yrs now.

We have stricter restrictions than UK at the moment. I'm keeping busy with dog walks, reading, perching up my tree (family history), cooking and housework (as little as possible of those 2 🙂 )

Hope you enjoy getting to know people on here.

Pat 🙂

What area in Cyprus do you live? I have been to Paphos several times keep in contact on fb with Billy's Bar so kept upto date with things your end-Im in isolation due to my but luckily weather has been good here so spend time in my garden (as I love gardening) then enjoy the sun sitting out reading
Response from islandPat made on 19th Apr 2020 10:54:34 > @Christiana
Kolossi in the Limassol area. Paphos is a tourist area with tourist prices 🙂

If you are going to be restricted this is a good place due to pleasant weather.

Just gone up to 25 C at the moment and I have a dog to walk so can see the area twice a day.

Pat 🙂
