Greetings to all. My post is not about a border collie though I know for sure they are wonderful dogs. When I saw the topic, I had to dig deep back in my mind but found the phrase my dad taught me.
Something like this..."Never date or make friends with a person that does not like dogs but more importantly, when the dog does not like the human". I've lived by this "golden nugget" and it's beyond true. The same goes for little children. I can honestly say never, ever, would I date nor marry one who dislikes canines. 🙂
Response from simbadog made on 25th Sep 2020 18:29:43
Hi Robbie2499 you are absolutely right!
Canine, feline I love em all. Had dogs all my life and currently have a 13 year old mastiff Cross. What a gem he is loyal, trusting, affectionate the list rolls on. He has been the companion of several cats and most recently a small kitten with cat flu who followed us home and he allowed her in his bed offering warmth and comfort.
He isn't able to walk too far these days so I walk dogs at the local shelter which is so rewarding.
They give so much and enrich our lives without doubt

Hello. I love dogs and currently have 2 American Bulldogs, an English Bull Terrier and a Dogue de Bordeaux. To the person with the aggressive German Shepherd puppy, I would be curious to know if he was raised in an isolated situation.

Hi all, just my topic.. I have a big fluff ball, or that's what it seems soo o much dog hair, but he's worth it, my husband and I went to get a small dog from RSPCA as our old one died and it was so awful without a one, we had always had larger ones, we came home and decided the lurcher with so much collie in him was the one, taken from a traveller site at 6 months, then rehomed 4 times and returned each time, my heart broke for him, every time he bit my husband he was going back!! to start with he did that a lot, really making his arms bleed he disliked men, then the change happened, he trusted us and became my husbands bestie, sadly Mike my husband died 4 years ago, my dog is my best friend now, sounds silly but he's always where I am, best dog I could wish for,

hardest day of my life last week, had to put to sleep my beloved gsd...the vet said it was the kindest thing to do...but it doesn't feel that way...I have had a front line job all my life, even seen death in the military, but this is so much different....I had to make the decision and I feel guilty and heartbroken.time is a healer, but for now, there is no healing.so very sad.
Response from georgesmum made on 10th Sep 2017 18:17:40
So sad ....and all us dog people will understand how you are feeling right now. It is a very distressing time, especially when you have to make that final decision to let your beloved pet go.
I had to do this recently and although my dog was 17 and was blind and deaf I still felt guilty despite knowing that it was the right thing to do.....a horrible experience but as all pet owners know , it is usually an inevitable part of the process.
Our thoughts are with you soldierbloo.
Response from galebrandon made on 5th Jul 2020 13:18:48 > @georgesmum
Hi i know your post is pretty old now but can you tell me why you had your dog put to sleep and how did you come to the decision. My German shepherd is nearly 13 and has no health problems apart from her legs are so weak now i have to help lift her up , she does do the odd toilet mess. I am in 2 minds in weather to keep her a bit longer or try make the decision to have her put to sleep. It is killing me at the moment as i love her so much and i don't know what to do.

hello,my heart goes out to you.when theback legs of gsd go,it is so sad to watch.they will often mess themselves, because they cannot rise, often eating the mess to hide it.13 is a good age for a shepherd, mine was the same. I still get upset about putting hiim down,he was my best friend.I did not want him to leave me and I was so guilty.as your dog is so special, you will never forget and a part of you will always be sad. people say just get another dog,but I could never go through with it again.you have a decision to make and it will hurt.people can advise, but only you know how it will be and how you will hurt. take care,Joe.

Response from PurpleHat made on 1st Apr 2020 17:05:25
Hi dogwalker and banyan21

What sort of dog?
Mine is a red and white mostly Border collie called Jill. She is about 4 now, and a thinking dog who finds her own devices to solve problems. She has a beautiful nature, but is crafty and quite mischievous. And yes I talk to her and she has great body language to tell me what she wants. I live with my daughter who has a young pure Merle collie, she looks on Jill as her Aunt as she came to us as a pup. Jill knows exactly how to manage her !!!

In the U.S., getting a rescue dog is considered admirable, and animal organizations encourage it. I know the Brits love their purebreds. Do shelters and other rescue places encourage people to adopt adult dogs/mixed breeds? I have two rescue dogs...one a purebred dachshund (we found him running down a busy street and couldn't find his owners) and a small mixed breed from the SPCA. I have nothing against pure breeds, but I keep reading horror stories about inbreeding and severe health problems. I hope I don't sound judgmental, I am just curious.
Response from PatriciaB96 made on 16th Jan 2020 21:50:54
Good evening , I have always had rescue dogs , mine at the moment is a Stafford bull terrier mix , most loving animal you could think possible .
Response from banyan21 made on 21st Mar 2020 21:33:32
Hi Lonewolf, I don't think you sound judgmental , My first dog was a pure breed a cocker spaniel who i loved dearly, he lived until he was 13. It took me 6 years to get another dog and decided on a rescue dog . I had been looking at rescue sites and saw a picture of this small dog a Jack Russel x Chihuahua he looked so sad so i decided to go see him, he was so nervous that they kept him in the cattery away from the other noisy dogs, they didn't know he's back ground. After visiting him every day for a week i took him home, to cut along story short he was hard work my friends kept telling me to take him back but i persevered and now my Timmy wants to be next to me all the time he shows me more love than my cocker spaniel ever did.
