Would you like to turn back time?

Would you like to turn back time? This is a question posed by one our our members who would welcome your views …

“Just recently I have read of so many people who want to return to the fifties, sixties, seventies etc and seem to want to live in the past. What do you think? I can remember lining up for the necessary inoculations and praying that I wouldn’t be last in the queue as the needle got blunt (yes, they used the same needle for the whole class); only being able to buy a limited range of vegetables; being able to play outside and having to come home when it got dark; having only one television channel and that was in black/white. We’ve come a long way but although life is very different now, I welcome most of the changes.”

Are you happy in the current era, or would you like to revisit the past? What are your views?

You can't change history but it is what shapes us the future is uncertain, but we coped with the past and hopefully will cope with the future. It reminds me on the song.Regrets I've had a few but then again to few to mention .I did it my way.

If I could turn back time I would go on to Australia from my year in Greece - I had a good friend there who would have welcomed me...she was always telling me to go...but I chickened out when I left Athens and went home to UK. I feel that was my biggest mistake and would like to do it all again until that point...but this time go on to Oz! How different things would have been...I will never know! 🙂

I would definitely not like to go back in time. My book 'Health and Heartbreak - Healthcare Before the NHS' describes what people had to put up with before modern medicine. It's thought-provoking reading. Be thankful for what we've got.

Maybe people should go back to recognise what we have and what we risk losing?

So agree with you! Times have changed in so many ways and not always for the better. People seemed to be kinder then... in the main. I think we were happier....we socialised a lot in our teens. I went off to work as a Representative for a Teeside holiday company when 19...first season in Belgium second in Italy...worked in London as a Secretary some of the time...before itchy feet took me to Greece to live for a year...working for a Greek/Canadian Sociologist ..visiting Egypt for a week at Christmas where I stayed with a woman (who also worked for her) and her family - and spent the day at the Pyramids 25th December..having a massive picnic meal and playing volley ball! Met lovely people and had experience of different cultures and traditions which I enjoyed so much! Vive la difference I say...we don't all have to be the same....we can each learn and take pleasure from each other's traditions and lifestyles. Working in London my friend was a girl who had come over from Goa...at the time I had no concept of the change that would have been to her lifestyle...I often wonder where she is now! Gosh yes, I would go back and do it all again! If only!

It depends why and what part of your life you would want to turn back to I suppose, yes we all miss loved ones and would want to see them again but not re live and watch them die. I wouldnt want to go back, why live through it all again. Now if it was the case where you could go back and change the path you took in life then yes I would as I would have learnt from all my mistakes I made in life.
Response from jeanmark made on 3rd Dec 2016 13:08:28
But surely those mistakes are what made you who you are today. Like most people I made mistakes but I'm happy with who I am, would I be the same person without those experiences?

I would love to go back in time to do all the lovely, simple things that I enjoy with both my lovely daughters and son such as lunch, chit chat over a cup tea, have a family dinner made by me... I lost my dear mother 43 years ago to a terrible illness which she endured for 13 years before she died, 30 years ago. I was 10 yrs old at the time. I wear her wedding ring everyday to remind me of how both her and precious my own lovely family are to me.

What would be the point of going back, I wouldn't want to change anything because what happened then, be it good or bad, is what made me who I am now.

I'm not so sure people really want to return to a past time, but may be what they refer to is a "standard and society that was basically good" which today is somewhat lacking - good manners, swearing and loud behavior as common place now, school children who are permitted to call their teachers by their first name, take mobiles to school in class, no discipline or respect in schools - just look at the teachers who have been murdered, the four children under 16 who this year have murdered adults, to the free speech that has enabled those to establish and radicalize young people, the facebook pages that permit videos of beheadings and atrocities, the lifestyle choices of those who wish to have children when they cannot afford them but expect to be supported by the taxpayer because it's their right to choose to have children. Working in the medical profession for many years I witnessed the latter far too many times. Of course technology, medical science and further equality for women has been a great step forward, but personally I'm not sure our society in many of the ways I've mentioned would not be better if we had some of the morals and standards of the 50's, 60's and 70's...You could pretty well walk the streets safely, and you didn't fear that some bomb or crazed religious sector could wipe you or loved ones out...

Oh yes I would turn back time if I could, and as others have said here, I'd take with me the knowledge of the years lived. I'd be more self aware and confident, NOT get married because "that's what you do", Value and push for education that I never knew I could have (went to Uni at 45yrs), Carve my career - not just work in jobs where others decided my work/life balance. Have a different attitude to alcohol and socialising; probably not start smoking??? However, with very few exceptions I would not change the people in my life - they are who have made my life richer and fuller; they have given me love and my memories, and I thank them all xxx

Myself, I hated life at home, my Mum was the most obnoxious person to walk the earth, my Dad was just as bad. I left home at 19 to join the Army and, never went back. My wife watches a TV programme about people trying to find their natural parents, I said to her that I'd be mortified if anybody came looking for me

i too had an awful mother, she was the most horrible, vicious and cruel human being I have ever known. She hated me for reasons that I could never understand.
Shortly before her death I asked her. 'why have you always hated me?' Her answer was, ' I couldn't even begin to tell you.'
I don't know what I must have done to earn her hatred, and now I never will.
Response from ThatManViv made on 23rd Aug 2016 14:27:52
me too ... but I was dragged up by viscious sick grandparents who hated me because someone their eldest daughter and I popped out ... when I introduced my grandmother to my wife many many years later the first words out of her mouth were, He was an unusual child, I could beat him as much as I liked, but I couldnt make him cry ....

she, her nasty husband, and their 10 other children treated me in ways i won't share... at 16, they ripped up my school report and told me you dont this anymore, you're going to work now to pay us back all the money we spent on you .... and when I said I am not, my grandmother thru hot tea over me ... that afternoon I packed a few clothes, took whatever money I had saved and left. Sickos.

How sad for you both, my mother, well she was my mother. I believe she loved my sisters and I but was a very selfish woman and always saw life as it affected her. She never intended to have children, unfortunately we all arrived. I don't think she ever forgave me for arriving three years after the other two and for disturbing her breakfast! She was useless as a housewife and we grew up believing men always did everything, just as well we all married men capable of doing everything. She would say what she wanted even if it could hurt someone, she didn't actually care if it did. In fairness she would never get offended at what was said to her. At times she appeared cold but we never once questioned her love. I see mother/daughter relationships that are very close and think "am I envious, could things have been different" and then think "no, she brought me up to be the woman I am today and I rather like myself"!

I'd love to go back to when I was in love with my second partner. WoW, it was a great time, so lustful and adventurous for the pair of us after we had both had long relationships with dull sexually boring partners before that. Along with it came a great energy for doing alsorts of things we had never done before, like sailing, rock climbing, ballroom dancing, and other stuff .... too bad she discovered a love of money and the company of richer folk .... ahhh welll

I'd love to go back in time and alter a couple of things that I know have harmed me for good. I wouldn't change anything about having my two sons though. I would try to alter the way things turned out in my country of birth (Rhodesia/Zimbabwe). I am very lucky to have had the time that I did have there! I wish that I could get my health back too. I would love to have had more time with my Dad, so I'd change his health too! I am still very lucky to have my beautiful Mum here!

Yes, I'd like to turn back time. I'd love to go back to the 1970s and relive my life during that time but with the knowledge I have now intact. I'd make entirely different decisions!

Yes, I would like to go back. As an adult, to visit my family, see my mum and dad again. Also, I think if I could visit me, when I was a child, maybe I could try to encourage the confidence that was lacking and has always held me back. Love to see our old dog again. Yes, things are better, but we have also lost so much.

Would love to go back to the 1950's when I was a boy, neighbours helped each other, called in to see you if you were sick and friends were "real friends" Society today seems to be very self centered and heavily in debt to pay for items they really cannot afford.
