What book are you currently reading?

Thought this would be a good place to share your taste in literature! What books have you read recently, what are you reading now and how would rate them? Would you recommend anything to a fellow Silverhairs friend?

Do you use a Kindle or similar or do you prefer a real book to hold?

I have just finished reading the Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, which my youngest daughter is studying for ‘A’ Level. It is a devastating, masterful and painfully honest story … it tells the gripping account of a boyhood friendship destroyed by jealousy, fear, and ruthless evil.

The Kite Runner is an astonishing, powerful book that had me riveted from the first to the last page. It is a story of fierce cruelty and yet redeeming love, as well as of an intimate account of family and friendship.

I found it compelling and disturbing and opened my eyes to how evil reigns in the Middle East. Next on my list is A Thousand Splendid Suns written by the same author.

How about you?

Finished When Night's Were Cold by Susana Jones. Not a straightforward story as it changed from present, past and imaginary without warning. Once I got into it it was very compelling. Strong characters, well drawn, if a bit stereotyped. Funny thing was I could see them as some of the people we all meet in our own lives. Good story and well worth reading.

Just finished reading Michael Palin's The Truth. Interesting but it took me quite a while to get into it, then ended up having to answer a very pertinent question for today's society. How do we deal with the truth? Now started reading When Night's Were Cold by Susanna Jones. Quite different from my normal reading choice. Not sure how it will turn out. Both books borrowed from the mobile library.

Just discovered Diane Chamberlain and found her books hard to put down. Also love Wilbur Smith and Nora Roberts. I pick up books in the supermarket or order from Amazon for kindle on Android. I must always have a book on the go.

I've just read The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton, really interesting and slightly spooky. I read 'real' books and I have a kindle for travelling.

Currently reading The Truth by Michael Palin. At first it seemed to me that there was no clear plot. Was it about writing a book, the main character's personal life, travel, or saving the planet. I kept reading but was not caught up in it. Last night that changed, suddenly I wanted to know more. Would the book be written and would the reader be challenged to become involved with the issues facing the environment?
Now I look forward to reading to the end.

I have just finished The Sea by John Banville. An interesting book. My Book Club choice and not someone I'd heard of. Not so sure I am recommending it; I am just saying it was thought provoking.

I thought I'd never want to have anything but an ordinary book to read, but I've now got myself a kindle paperwhite, and it's great. So easy when going on holiday.
I'm reading at the moment The Red House by A.A. Milne, and before that I was reading Life after Life by Kate Atkinson, I love her books.

I'm going on a long train journey next week, so thought I'd get stuck into a book now and hopefully finish it off while travelling. Starting to read Angels and Demons by Dan Brown. I know some critics say he's a little mainstream and over simplistic but I really enjoyed the Da Vinci code and the few 3 chapters of Angels and Demons is just as gripping. Highly recommended.

I read Angels and Demons a while ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Dan Brown 's strength I think is in his short chapters which always seem to leave you on a cliff edge, yet because they are short you can leave the book at any time and go back to it. Ideal for holidays or traveling.

i'm on the last pages of hotel iris, and i've had a change of plan 1Q84 can wait, i'm going to read hermann hess' 'steppenwolf' he wrote this when he was 50 so it seems like a good idea for me to read it now. 50 then (1927) was probably quite different to 50 now, it was probably considered ancient!

so i'm still re-reading hotel Iris. with certain books a re-read always unlocks another level or dynamic between the characters that you missed/overlooked in a previous read. think i may pick up 1Q84 after i finish..... anyone else read that?

ok i read on my kindle, ipod, and paper books. i read a lot, most genres but not so much in the chick-lit category. last few great reads include Just Kids by Patti Smith, The Alchemist by Paul Coelho, A Sport and a Pastime by James Salter, and A lovers Dictionary by David Levithan. My kindle has mostly self published authors, my Ipod e format thats not on kindle, and my paper includes pre e format or books that 'need' to be felt when read (so i have books on e format and paper copies.....i haven't read the fifty shades trilogy, as there are books out there in that genre that are far better reads......

'Wedlock' by Wendy Moore after her superb biography of John Hunter in 'Knifeman'. She researches so well and writes an engrossing, interesting fact filled book. If you're interested in Georgian England they are wonderful insights. Waiting for her 'How to Make The Perfect Wife' to come out in paperback. Liza Picard's books are also wonderful books of historical facts, many hilarious.

Recently read M.R Hall's 'Flight' - brilliant! Part of his coroner series.

Kindles have their place, but I much prefer a paper book with a nice bookmark!

I am just about to finish 'The Reader', paperback edition which I borrowed from the local mobile library. Have enjoyed it very much and despite the beginning, it becomes a very thought provoking read. I have a Kindle and have obtained some of my old university books for free. Have also published my first novel as an e-book through Kindle. Others tell me they have enjoyed reading it. Not allowed to advertise here but can I say my name is Alistair Dunlop?

I'm currently reading Antonia Fraser's "The Weaker Vessel:- a woman's lot in seventeenth-century England". In spite of its rather daunting title, it's an interesting survey - it does what it says.
In fiction, my best read for a long time has been C J Sansom's Dominion, a "what-if" book - in this case "What if Germany had won the war?". It' s the usual fantasy stuff, but an entirely plausible, fictional, look at what might have been. Highly recommended.:-)

I just finished reading "on Helwig Street" by Richard Russo. Very disappointed.. Particularly since I paid more than I have ever paid for a download on my Kindle.
I had the sample and it appeared to give me something of interest since it tells of a place called Gloversville in upstate NY, an area I am well familiar with. Instead Mr.Russo writes about his mother ( who I am not familiar with but became so by the end of the book). No doubt it all had great depth and it all depends why we want to read a certain book.
Soooo my next download is an el cheapo and it looks quite entertaining.
I love reading about places I know and about people who do interesting things in their lives. I love local history and life styles.
At my time of life things have to be on the light side
