Motoring: Dashboard Cameras on private vehicles
Watch this postIn the news yesterday was a report that many private motorists have cameras mounted on the dashboard, monitoring other drivers on the roads, besides their own driving abilities or otherwise. Good or bad, as members of the public are sending the recordings to the Police, who have used the footage for convictions. Big brother vigilantes, or is this a good move, and would you have such equipment fitted to your vehicle. I understand that many haulage companies already use them in their vehicles. what are your views, and has anyone got one fitted, or have been the subject of one?

I was following a van, on a dual carriageway, when it seemed to lose control and swerve into another car, severely damaging it. The van speeded off. My camera, caught the registration number and showed the police and insurance company what had happened and helped convict the van driver.
I will never drive without a camera onboard.
I could tell another two stories, but I won't bore you.
An absolute must have, but make sure it is good enough to read number plates at distances and records clearly at night.
As for sending it to the Police thats I would have to think about
I bought the camera in case anything like that happened again and I wasn't lucky enough to have a witness.
I think they should be fitted as standard in all vehicles.
I don't think it's Big Brother - just trying to make our streets a bit safer. This makes me feel really old but there are so many cars on the road these days that it is rarely a pleasure to drive. Everyone seems to be in so much of a hurry; impatient at any queue; tail-gating or overtaking when almost impossible. But my pet hate is seeing the phone users and for that reason alone, I would put up with a camera.
