Just joined so I'm introducing myself.

I will be 67 next month and retired from the many different jobs in my working life. I guess that I didn’t ever find my calling. I went to university at age 59 but when it was over it was too late to launch a new career. I wanted to lecture but students don’t want to listen to old fogies, so sadly I put aside that idea and settled into life as an eccentric dog owner.

I live in a beautiful Lancashire valley surrounded by hills that demand they be walked/climbed, how could I refuse?

I would like to do a bit of cycle touring but a recent diagnosis of spondylosis and some hip pain means that I may not be doing a world tour anytime soon!

I’m keen to make some friends as I have been on my own for a very long time now, my daughters don’t bother much with me and I don’t have a partner.I didn’t expect to be so isolated at this time in my life, isn’t it strange the way family and friends seem to forget us when we get past 60?

I will pop in regularly and hope to strike up some friendships.

Hello Celty, (hope that's an okay contact name) I have just joined this chat group. Have found it really hard to understand the joining process and am not really an IT novice but some of these sites confuse me so much. I am 65 this year and like you find my life is passing me by far too quickly. My girls do keep in touch but not as often as I would like but then we do all live miles apart. Mind you a quick text once a week would not hurt would it? I am a dog fanatic too( have had labradors, whippets, afghan hounds great danes yorkshire terriers and now border collies although these were not my choice but my husbands though I love them to bits! I am also a 'quiet' psychic but I do not tell many people this as most just poo poo it. I take in all manner of waifs and strays of the furry feathered kind and am happiest when they are all safe and sometimes I escape to my caravan on the east coast of yorkshire knowing my pets are safe at home with my husband and I am foot loose and fancy free for awhile to be the true free spirit I need to be. We only got the van last year and I have never been happier. I walk along the beach on my own, bare foot, summer or winter (usually with a couple of black bags beach cleaning!!) and i feel - well complete. I feel that, if the world ended right there and then, I could be at peace. oh dear listen to me. war and peace in one episode. I forgive you in advance if you do not reply. Hopefully you will do and I will beable to find your reply on here, which I will look forward to. Helen

Hi Helen, I think that you will find that Celtwitch no longer uses the Siversurfers site but there are loads more of us who dip in and out and chat to our "virtual" friends and comment on the many interesting topics. Hopefully, you will find your way back to your post and if you click on the turquoise icon on the right hand side of your screen, you will see if anyone has commented on a topic you are interested in. Whereabouts do go on the East coast? I love Scarborough and Whitby and thereabouts as they are more picturesque than Bridlington and further south down the coast although I do like Spurn Point and watching the seabirds on the cliffs near Flamborough. Well done you for beach cleaning! 🙂

Hi there celtwitch. I'm new too. Just signed up today and have little idea about how to proceed. I can relate to your loneliness and estrangement. I am 71. Although I am fortunate to have a husband, I have a son who lives far away and doesn't stay in touch very much. I retired early (at age 51) and my husband and I relocated to coastal Maine. At first it was great, but then it became boring. Very boring. I still find retirement a very boring and lonely situation and do not seem to be able to find anything to fill my time. I am always amazed and perplexed when I hear people say how wonderful retirement is. I guess I just never cultivated any hobbies. I'd be interested in chatting with people who find themselves in a similar situation or those who can offer some suggestions.

I have just joined the forum and will be retiring in August this year. I'm excited, but also slightly scared as I've worked more or less full time for the last 40 years, and hoping to be able to fill my days.

I'm thinking about purchasing a property through shared ownership- part buy/part rent and wondered whether anyone had done this and could recommend it, please?
Response from Andycccuk made on 20th Jan 2018 15:39:31
I have done part buy without any problems
Response from Christina B made on 20th Jan 2018 16:11:01
Thanks Andy. That's reassuring. I'm making enquiries at the moment so I'll let you know how I get on!

Hi i live in the hills in victoria, australia,i am turning 64 soon and need friends as life can change and i have become overwhelmed with lonliness and loss and i was so content with life.i worked and now retrenched, live on isolated property, girls are married and settled and i went from whirlwind life of busy to feeling lost, i feel invisible, cant get work in small country towns, joined couple social activities , being single and had really bad relationship, put me into trauma,!,i love people and being active,i run a few cows on farm.
I need to feel like i belong in this world ,does anyone else relate to this?,

Hello Hellybee
Nice name!!!
I lived in rural Victoria for about 12 years so I know it can be a bit depressing .
After my divorce , I had to find somewhere with a lot more" life " going on around me so I finally settled on the Gold Coast in Qld. A move which I have never regretted. I'm still single but live in hope and I have more friends up here than I ever had in East Gippsland.
It's a busy area but I have a nice apartment with ocean views, I live a very short walk from the beach and life couldn't get much better. Perhaps you need to make a very drastic change to your life too.
I find the people here are happier because of the endless days of sunshine blue sky and beautiful beaches....Don't leave it too long!!!!
Ian

Hi Hellybee,
I agree with Ian's comments - not sure which planet DavidV3 is on so will ignore his remark! 🙂 Sometimes we have to re-invent ourselves, especially after the end of a traumatic relationship, but it can be done. It's a sad fact of life that even when you live, as I do, in a busy community people aren't going to beat a path to your door so you just have to get out and do things. Each journey starts with one small step or even a notepad to start jotting down how you want your life to be and what you need to do to achieve those goals. Often easier said than done so baby steps to begin with and you will soon be striding out. Good luck and let us know what you are doing and how you are - Silversurfers are a friendly bunch!

Hi Mary
I live in Palm Beach on the Gold Coast in Qld. I was born in Scotland and have lived here for almost 20 years, became an Australian citizen last year.
I love the Aussie way of life and the weather is almost always perfect.

Just joined and looking forward to reading others posts.
I live in South Wales in the beautiful Vale of Glamorgan very lucky to live close to lots of beaches and parks.
Holidays our favourite place is Devon and Cornwall.
Response from CaroleAH made on 19th Jan 2018 13:11:51
Hi Cheryl,
Welcome to Silversurfers - lots of subjects to look at and add your comments to. I notice that you like researching your family tree and agree that it is a time-consuming hobby - just right for these cold winter days! It's also expensive - my latest fee to Ancestry was £179 but I justify it to myself as I don't smoke and rarely drink 🙂 I have found long-lost second cousins in Australia ( our mothers used to write to each other in the 1920s!) so that is really exciting. I've also researched all the men on our local village war memorial and printed all the details off for a folder which is kept in church.

Hi, just joined the Chat and was wondering how well used it is.
I'm a retired lady who has just moved house to be nearer family. The recent move took up so much of my time, solicitors don't rush, that I am now putting out feelers to increase my interests.
My main interest is researching my family tree which has lead me down some strange paths as far apart as Lancashire and Cornwall with many stop offs in between. I enjoy swimming and walking but its not all healthy activity as I enjoy a good night out with friends.
I am in the middle of laying a new garden as I have moved to a new build house. My family and friends are astonished at the amount of work I have achieved but my philosophy is that age is just a number.
Anyone out there wants to chat?
Response from Angel9uk made on 4th Jan 2018 17:40:32
Sorry about your sad year.
Where do you live?? I am originally from Yorkshire but now live in Skegness.
I am interested in Family History too. Going to places on holiday that included a visit to the cemetery hahaha.
Response from CherylD7 made on 18th Jan 2018 23:23:45
I'm interested in my family tree too....but wow doesn't it take up a lot of time and concentration....false leads etc.
I definitely found relatives in Devon, and suspect Cornish connection too. Amazingly I found a living relative on Facebook and discovered we have a shared grtgrandfather who sadly died in the Senghenydd mining disaster after moving to Wales from Devon. Will get back to rejoining Ancestry shortly for more searching .

Hi everyone. My name is Sue and I retired from a 30 year teaching career recently. I think I am becoming a bit of a couch potato though I do love to walk my dogs and am learning the piano - something I have wanted to do for ages. I live in the West Midlands area and would love to find people to chat to

Hi everyone I am recently retired so have some time on my hands, just finding my way around this site it seems to change everytime I visit, I thought there used to be a place for posting blog entries but seem to have lost it. Anyway happy to talk to anyone on here. I live in Bedfordshire, like scifi and history and of course science, and I have a dog. Oh and I also am into gardening and if anyone has a method of getting rid of or controlling rampant bamboo growth please get in touch.
