ian blair's bio
I'm 68 and have been single for about 8 years. Most of my working life was spent in the building trade after I served 10 years in the British army. I have seen a fair bit of the world and have lived in Australia for the past 18 years. Now a dual citizen of 2 of the world's greatest countries.I'm enjoying retirement and trying to see more of Aus; but still want to see Europe once more before my time is up. -

Has 'wokeism' killed comedy?Just what does "wokeism " mean to the the uneducated and "un-PC" people like me ? I think people who have no sense of humour are offended by anything they can't understand and would like to inflict their misery on the rest of us. If you don't like the programme that offends you , TURN IT OFF.ViewDate:

A land downunderWell Hello Dolly!!! I know a song about that!! Just kidding, I also live in Queensland ,Palm Beach on the Gold Coast.I love it, the weather ,the lifestyle, the slow pace of life near the beach is so good for the spirit. I was born in Glasgow but I have lived in Australia for 20 years now, just turned 70 and I'm traveling around Europe for a few weeks ,I will be back home late October and already looking forward to it. Nostalgia is not what it used to be and neither is the weather, I remember Autumn as the nicest part of the year but it has turned cold here in Germany, hope it's just temporary. I hope you can find the time to reply as I would like to learn more about you. Regards IanViewDate:

Are you concerned about the economic impact of Brexit? Our political and military ties with Europe may be distasteful to some but I believe the EU and NATO have kept Russia at bay for nearly 70 years , most of that time we have had peace and prosperity and now we may find ourselves in jeopardy , divided but not yet conquered. Like most other Western countries who benefited greatly from the industrial revolution , we face recessions and defisites partly due to the millions of tons of "stuff" we buy from the cheap Eastern , Asian and Oriental manufacturers . Whatever happened to "Buy British"? Perhaps it's time to look at some of Donald Trump's mad theories, they have started to "Buy American" and it seems to be working.ViewDate:

Are you concerned about the economic impact of Brexit?I remember eating Stork margarine when I was at primary school back in the 1950's, we couldn't afford Butter even then , that was 20 years before going into Europe . Even the so called experts can't agree whether the EU is good for Britain so what chance has the average person of having an informed opinion when he can't remember eating margarine.ViewDate:

TRAVELING SOLO AND LOOKING FOR A COMPANION?Hi I'm also hoping to find a travel companion for a trip around Europe this year. I'm 69 going on 28 so I still have the adventurous spirit. I must spend some time in Italy as I've never been , I would prefer to drive and take the train , I don't fancy the whirlwind coach trips that travel through lots of countries but see very little along the way. TRAVELING SOLO AND LOOKING FOR A COMPANION?I'm also planning a holiday in Europe this year and would like to find like minded travel companion /s. , even if only for part of the trip. I'm 69 going on 28!!!! Not coach tours!!!! I intend to hire a car and travel without making too many reservations as I believe we should not be tied too much to an itinerary. I must include Italy for at least a week as I've never been. Vienna is also high on my list but I am extremely flexible apart from these two places. Fun is absolutely paramount. IanViewDate:

Speakers Corner CommentsHello Christine, I really didn't mean to cause offence, but I do think we are lucky to call ourselves British, Unfortunately the drop in standards as you have noticed is universal except for South Korea and maybe Switzerland and a very few other countries. I think the world financiers would have most of us working for slave wages if they could get away with it and they care naught for the consequences. Buy British and remember the sixties. IanViewDate:

Speakers Corner Commentsperhaps they would resort to the old ways and start building more houses, employ more builders, support more builders suppliers, ? but wait, that would start to reduce unemployment and who knows where it might all go from there?ViewDate:

Just joined so I'm introducing myself.Hello Hellybee Nice name!!! I lived in rural Victoria for about 12 years so I know it can be a bit depressing . After my divorce , I had to find somewhere with a lot more" life " going on around me so I finally settled on the Gold Coast in Qld. A move which I have never regretted. I'm still single but live in hope and I have more friends up here than I ever had in East Gippsland. It's a busy area but I have a nice apartment with ocean views, I live a very short walk from the beach and life couldn't get much better. Perhaps you need to make a very drastic change to your life too. I find the people here are happier because of the endless days of sunshine blue sky and beautiful beaches....Don't leave it too long!!!! IanViewDate:

Just joined so I'm introducing myself.Hello Christine I think you must be very brave to consider going on a trip with someone whom you have never met except on the internet. I understand the need for a travel companion as I too am sick of paying double as a single traveller. I think you have to know someone really well to be able to enjoy a holiday together. Best of luck with it and I would love to hear of your success. IanViewDate:

Will the addition of Meghan Markle to the Royal Family help modernise the Monarchy?I think our royal family are the envy of the English speaking world. I have lived here in Australia for almost 20 years and have seen the referendum on becoming a republic, fail miserably. Long may they reign.ViewDate:

English GrammarHaving lived in more than one country whose first language is English, I have" gotten used" to hearing words used out of context. I still prefer this to "got used" and when compared with "forgotten and forgot" My real pet hate is when people write " could of" instead of " could've.ViewDate:

My children never visit me - am I being unreasonable? No , you are not being unreasonable and try to remember that this is how the majority of offspring treat their parents. But don't lose hope, they will be around to see you as soon as they are in financial stress.ViewDate:

Just joined so I'm introducing myself.G'day LittleMinx I live in Australia now but used to live in Essex for about 18 years, I was born in Scotland but left at age 17 I have also spent some time in Hampshire, a very beautiful part of our country. Aus; is a great place to retire , the beaches are magnificent but the rest of the outback is barren desert and ugly. The people are great if a little parochial and they are convinced that Australia is the greatest country on the planet , even if they have never travelled. I also enjoy visual art , especially the old masters and what I would call conventional art, I find modern stuff to be phoney ,even monkeys can make pictures and we are led to believe it is art, I don't think so!!! Having said that, I do like Picasso and Salvadore Dali. As for UFO's, I have an open mind, I don't think it possible that we could be the only life in the entire ,unimaginably big universe. I also live alone but don't have any pets, one day if I can find the time I may adopt a dog, if I can find one that will clean up it's own mess!!! I hope you are well and happy and if you are inclined to reply ,I will be very happy to hear some news from home. Regards IanViewDate:

Hi from ScotlandHi ecarg or should I call you Grace? I'm curious to know how you have been received as an English person living in Scotland as I was born in Glasgow and lived for 18 years in Essex. I was always well accepted by neighbours and workmates and I loved the people and the climate . I have often thought of it as the best time of my life . I live in Australia now but if I ever return to Europe, I would go back to Essex. IanViewDate:
