Just joined so I'm introducing myself.

I will be 67 next month and retired from the many different jobs in my working life. I guess that I didn’t ever find my calling. I went to university at age 59 but when it was over it was too late to launch a new career. I wanted to lecture but students don’t want to listen to old fogies, so sadly I put aside that idea and settled into life as an eccentric dog owner.

I live in a beautiful Lancashire valley surrounded by hills that demand they be walked/climbed, how could I refuse?

I would like to do a bit of cycle touring but a recent diagnosis of spondylosis and some hip pain means that I may not be doing a world tour anytime soon!

I’m keen to make some friends as I have been on my own for a very long time now, my daughters don’t bother much with me and I don’t have a partner.I didn’t expect to be so isolated at this time in my life, isn’t it strange the way family and friends seem to forget us when we get past 60?

I will pop in regularly and hope to strike up some friendships.

Hi...I’m a new member to Silver surfers..., I’m 84 years of age and live in South Woodford, which is a London borough, on the Essex border....Still fairly active, I run a friendship club, and also a creative arts club..I love painting...own a dog called Benji, which is a rescue dog from Cyprus...With all due respect to Paul O’Grady. It is not easy to adopt one in this country at my age...I have been widowed for 24 years, and still miss my husband..I like people, and it would be nice to make new friends..I am not alone, I have one son and three grandchildren, Days are fine, evenings in Winter are very long and rather depressing...nice to have someone to talk to.

Hi everyone, still grafting away earning a crust with the CWGC.
Response from CaroleAH made on 23rd Jan 2019 23:15:41
Hi Peter,
Welcome to Silversurfers - hope you find a lot of interesting topics to join in with and that you soon find your way around the site.
I would be interested to hear more about your work with the CWGC. I used its website a lot when researching all the men on a local village war memorial and have also acted as the liaison person for my parish so that we could have a CWGC sign at the entrance to our two graveyards advising passers-by that there are war graves within.
Response from PeterD48 made on 24th Jan 2019 18:16:43
I work for the CWGC maintaining the 1st & 2nd world war graves in the following areas, London, Surrey, Kent, East & West Sussex , Hampshire ( including Isle of Wight) , Berkshire & Buckinghamshire, we clean the headstones & renew them when needed, it's a large area and I'm part of a 6 man team , although we could double that to tackle this, I've just been putting signs on cemeteries and church gates to let the public know there are war graves in these grounds.
Response from CaroleAH made on 24th Jan 2019 19:50:02
That's a huge area to cover, Peter and I'm not surprised that you could double the workforce and, no doubt, still be inundated with work.
Response from JoannaD1 made on 25th Jan 2019 09:15:09
please accept my ignorance. not heard of your organisation..but a few years ago i joined a working party to Islay (scottish island) we were tasked with repositioning certain stones that had been identified as of historical importance. a beautiful island-and as a sweetner were hosted by the isle's many whisky distillaries. have just joined here today. happy friday.
Response from CaroleAH made on 25th Jan 2019 12:29:04
Hi Joanna, welcome to Silversurfers. Your work on Islay sounds fascinating - how did you find out about the work? Was it voluntary? Just in case you didn't know - CWGC is the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and they have a great website.

Hi .. I was 76 yesterday and had a BA type of day, my Mobility car died on me - burnt out clutch, after only 10000 miles. Been sleeping very poorly for quite a few weeks now, as for some unknown reason I have been suffering from stress. Doc has prescribed sleeping pills, which don't work every night and that makes me more anxious. I live by myself and get bored very quickly, having severe arthritis in both knees I travelling is restrictred..so as I don't venture far afield I thought achat line might be a good idea...what might you all think abaout it - does it work for you. Best wishes and kind regards ~ Steve Winter

Hi , I've just joined and trying to find my way around. I live in Worcestershire and will be 71 next month. I must admit I do get a bit lonely in the winter but luckily I see my daughter and gorgeous grandson a couple of times a week. I enjoy gardening, holidays abroad, cooking, knitting, reading and crosswords. I'm looking forward to chatting with some of you if I can find my way back to this Forum!
Response from SheilaAT made on 23rd Jan 2019 22:34:39
Hi Northern, thanks for the welcome . I've been looking after Cobie (Grandson) today. I bought him some Lego which he played with for ages so a fairly lazy day for me.
Response from SheilaAT made on 24th Jan 2019 19:00:09
He would play with it for hours if I let him. He's only just 5 but does the 7 plus kits. Lego has changed so much since I was young, I only remember building bricks, there weren't any kits like today.

Hi all, I've been a member for three days now and really struggling to navigate my way around.. I've tried to upload a profile picture without success. I've also uploaded several photographs to the showcase gallery with limited success. I've yet to find a help button and find myself most frustrated as I scroll my mouse around and menu boxes open up left right and centre. I don't think I will last the distance. I am totally unsure I'm even writing this in an area that is suitable. Bemused
Response from Sally - Silversurfer's Editor made on 24th Jan 2019 08:59:40
Hi Tarka2 ... There are so many different elements on Silversurfers, it can take a little while to find your way around ... you are doing a great job as you have found the Forum and also the Showcase, and loaded successfully two great shots! We currently have a technical glitch with the profile photo uploader for some, so if you would like to email me your profile photo I can upload it from my end ... [email protected] ... We have an extensive Community Guide which may help you if you need it ... here is a direct link - https://www.silversurfers.com/community/ Hope this all helps 🙂

Hi Like so many others, I Have just joined two days ago .. and am finding my way around, but it's been really worth while, my main interest is on the photo side of things, although I am an immature, I take a lot of photo's and it gets me out and about.
but apart from that, after only a couple of days, I have already found it very easy to interact with a few people, just by making a few comments on peoples photo's etc, I have had a reply from them, and short chats, so I think it has been quite easy for me to join.
the other thing I like about this site is that all the bits and pieces I've gone into and read conversation, there has been no abuse to each other and the language has been clean and good, its pleasant and mostly good humoured, thank to the editor for such a pleasant site......
Response from LeonardM8 made on 22nd Jan 2019 21:59:55
thanks Trish. looking forward to seeing EVERYONES photo's, am slowly working my way through them all.
Response from CaroleAH made on 22nd Jan 2019 23:21:18
Good grief, Leonard! That's going to take for ever to trawl through everyone's photos! Good luck and no sulky faces if you have to go shopping 🙂
Response from LeonardM8 made on 23rd Jan 2019 14:05:30
Hi again Carole, its surprising actually, I went onto the photo page yesterday, and instead of selecting ALL I went through each person alphabetically , by going through fairly quickly, I got up to the Gs in one day, and by going on the main page each day, I can keep abreast of them all, as you say, it will take quite a while, but then with February coming up, that will get rid of that month.
Response from Jackiered made on 23rd Jan 2019 20:01:51
Where’s the photo page. I’m into a bit of photography but new on here so not used to it yet. Some help would be appreciated. Talking of photography, this site won’t upload my photo in profile. Any ideas? Thanks
Response from CaroleAH made on 23rd Jan 2019 23:23:54
Hi Jackiered,
Welcome to Silversurfers - I had a problem with uploading a new profile photo so contacted Sally, the Director of Silversurfers, and she said that there was a technical glitch and that she would upload my photo for me. If you look under the heading Showcase, you will see the section for uploading photos, literature or recipes - alternatively, if you click on the latest photo shown on the right-hand side of the page you will go directly to the photo gallery. Good Luck and I hope that we shall soon see some of your photos on the site 🙂
Response from LeonardM8 made on 24th Jan 2019 08:20:30
Hi Jackiered, I think Carole has explained the best way of going about it, hope to see your photo's soon.

Hi, I'm 55 and at a positive place in life, looking forward to this new year and how it will unfold, have grown up kids in their 20s that I enjoy seeing once in a while, while enjoying my newly found freedom of doing what ever I feel like doing, when ever I feel like it.

When my husband left after 25 + years, I didn't see how I'm going to start again, today I'm grateful for what he did, at least I have no regrets about anything, I've done my best and he did us both a favour, of course I'm not going to tell him that.

I've moved back to London and enjoying what London has to offer, however, sometimes I wish I knew more people locally around my age who want to do things too, eating out, bowling, boat trips, cinema, theatre or anything fun.

Hello. I am 62 working part time in a school office after many years of working in the classroom as a HLTA and before that as a childminder. I am married and I have children and grandchildren who luckily live quite near by so I see them at least once a week. I live in a village in the East Midlands and I am very active on village committees. I don't drive which makes me quite reliant on my husband taking me everywhere. I would love to travel more but have to go on my own as my husband is a home bird and will do a week in the UK but that's his limit! (he's not a confident driver) I am looking forward to meeting new people on this forum.

Hi I used to rely on my husband too. When he got I'll 3 years ago all changed. Sadly lost him a short time ago but he was ready to rest in peace, he had a lot of tough times. My friend and I have decided to go on an adventure ,we are going to usa a couple of weeks in nashville and 6 weeks in a house in florida. I am 63 and my friend is 74, she will drive. We both love to laugh and love meeting like minded people. We often had cottage hols when Norman was so poorly and love village life as we are from a village in cheshire called kingsley. Nice to talk to you.s.

I was interested to read your post as I am 60 and and having my HLTA assessment this week. I have worked as a TA for 18 years. After 38 years of marriage and lots of unhappy years I have decided to move out and start my life again.am feeling very sad one minute and excited the next. I signed up here as I spend a lot of time in my room alone and feel the need for company.

Hi Mokesmom Yes that is the caper ! Sadly they have declined in numbers radically over the last decade . Like a big turkey with a fan like tail .My late father in law was a keen golfer and played socially in the small 9 hole just outside the village . They had to close one of the holes as two male capers inhabited the wood adjoining and would frequently steal any balls they saw on the green ! Any effort to retaliate was not on – they are a protected species .
Response from Beauty made on 19th Jan 2019 14:28:04
May be better to be a caper these days..always preferable to be 'protected'....

It’ s interesting how those on this site occupy their time ! A lot depends on fitness . I have a border terrier and Irrespective of weather walk her 3 or 4 times a day I live in the Scottish Highlands and being a “ blogger “ always have my camera with me . Piece de resistance some years was capturing some pics of a capercaille which had taken up residence in mother in laws back garden It attacked her as she was trying to get into the garage – very territorial birds which sadly have disappeared from our neck of the woods . ! Enjoy the travel and the sunshine – it’s -6C here at present .

Hi, I'm also new at this and trying to navigate myself around the site! Keep find things and then losing them..

I'm also at an odd point in my life, never thought this would be it, however, have to keep mudding on. Recently moved back to where I was born as my sister lives here in Kent and am now living with her, she's a few years older. It's been quite a challenging time as we are so different and I guess both set in our ways. Retired last March and am now becoming so. bored am thinking about getting another job, but have no idea what!!

Sounds to me though that you should pursue what you set out to do, as to achieve what you have is a real accomplishment and a shame not to put into practise. What subject did you want to lecture in?

Families are weird things, are never what you expect them to be.

Take care
