Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden advises us to stockpile food and water for 72 hours in case of an emergency.

No reason given to stockpile food and water, so I am left wondering what they know that we don't. For many years I have kept emergency supplies well stocked up. How many people are taking this government warning seriously? Tinned goods Bottled water Wind up torches Alternate ways of cooking

Oliver Dowden as PM? I don't think so!
The very same man who wanted cartoons on the walls of an asylum seeking unaccompanied childrens unit to be painted over because they were too to welcoming.
Heartless!

Hello Grandpeters. I am not too keen on private messaging, but a friendly conversation on the forum could induce others to join in. After all, are most of us not lonely and wanting a nice conversation?

Given Dowden isn't the sharpest knife in the box, he just might have let slip something worth knowing.

I've been a rural dweller most of my life. It's quite normal to keep a month's supply of tinned goods, water purifying tablets, batteries etc., so no drama here, unless one lives in a city where everything is on tap all of the time.

It comes down to common sense in the end. Don't trust the system to provide for you, no, they'll always let you down. Simple really.

As a bye the bye, a few years ago some Americans salvaged the contents of a Liberty vessel lost, I read, in 1942. It was loaded with canned goods destined for Britain. Tins of Pacific salmon, American corned beef and a good few other things were opened. After more than seventy years the contents were as good as the day they were shipped.

Keep on hoarding tinned goods, you'll need them before sent years is up!

Wisely said Lionel.
Not to be a doomsayer but...
Whether the threat will be from Hackers. X Class Flares from the sun, war or the earth doing a flip. It is always a good idea to keep long life goods stored.
The most important being water.

The sun has been spewing out M class and X class flares earthward over some months now. The solar maximum will be in or around 2025. but scientists believe it could be sooner, maybe late June.
A CME ( coronal mass ejection) is due to hit earth today 29th June, so be prepared.
As you so rightly say, city dwellers will be hit the hardest.
Cashless society could be a disaster when the sun reaches maximum. Keep cash handy, don't stop using cash.

NASA & NOAA - ALERTS, WATCHES AND WARNINGS.
Current space weather conditions on NOAA scales predicted disruptions from a huge solar flares on the 28th and 29th June. Yesterday, several banks had outages and people were unable to access their accounts.
I went for a Pizza and their systems were down, by the way, they have gone cashless over the past few years

Well, I pressed the button before I had finished my blurb, so off it went into the ether.

I saw a notice in the doctors office a few days ago, saying the surgery would be closed on the 21st of June for a "planned" power cut.
I wonder if the power companies are preparing for the suns ' Coronal Mass Ejection's heading our way?
I have prepared as much as I can in case the grid goes down, crossed fingers that it won't be necessary..
