Places we've been

Hi all, I'm starting this topic so we can all tell each other about interesting places we've been, or close to where we live?

I did start a similar topic a few days ago, but it's a bit buried in the photographic section, not where many people will see it, so decided to bring this one to a place that's easier ti be seen. the idea is that because the members on this site cover the whole of the UK and probably the world ? I think it would be nice to have a topic that covers the hole area, so even if we don't travel very far, we can still see the places through the eyes of other members, and if you really feel generous , you put some photo's of places in the photo section, most NOT all of us, live in a routine of what we do and where we go, not always knowing where to goes lets spread our knowledge of places throughout the country with each other. I hope this topic will be popular, and get lots of members interested.....

The most exciting place I visited and loved was Russia staying in St Petersburg and Travelling for a stay in Moscow via fast train. Amazing. I found everyone very helpful and friendly.

I used to go camping before all the pandemic situation. We usually prefered backpacking all necessary things and go somewhere far away from the city with friends and family members. Unfortunately, we cannot do it now, but I hope we will soon, so I decided to get more information about camping equipment I wanna get https://activegeardirect.com/best-family-camping-tents-top-5/

One of the places I like to go is Wisley gardens, it's the RHS flagship garden, although they have 4 gardens up and running, and one being set up as we speak, so soon there will be 5.

the one I got to regularly though is at Wisley,
its just off the A3 road, a few miles north of Guildford, a nice easy one to get to, and is in Sat-nav's under its own name.

I am going to go there once a month for the next year, as they have most of the flowers I could wish to see and photograph.
I have been this month, just to have quick look, it was bitter cold but a lovely bright day, only took a few snaps, as I couldn't wait to get back to my warm car and defrost, ( I'm a wimp ) its only about 40 miles travel for me, and most times well worth the trip.

What I would like to know ?
Is there any members on this site that live in Devon ? or people that have visited RHS Rosemoore ? which is their gardens in the south west.
I would love to know what they think of it, as it would probably be about a 3 hour drive for me, due to the A303 being what it is, I would love to have someones first hand opinion , can anyone help with this. ?

Hi Len,
If you are ever in Yorkshire, perhaps on your way up to Scotland, you might want to visit RHS Harlow Carr in Harrogate. It's a fabulous place throughout the year and well worth a visit. I've got several photos in the Showcase which I have taken there and also Thorp Perrow Arboretum is wonderful in autumn (not RHS) - again some photos in the Showcase.

Thanks Carole, that is a discussion I have had with my wife as well,
we may well stop in on our way up, or way back, and do a B&B it would break the journey,
Killing two birds with one stone,
is it as big as Wisley ? Carole.
Response from CaroleAH made on 30th Jan 2019 16:27:14
Hi Len, Harlow Carr is only about a third of the size of Wisley but has lots of different areas of interest. I particularly like the stream-side walk which has a huge stone with a verse dedicated to Geoffrey Smith the gardener. He was a lovely man ( no airs and graces despite many television appearances and book signing events) and he lived quite near in a village called Kettlesing. There's also a Betty's Cafe on the site for indulgent cakes and lovely coffee. They also sell Fat Rascals - Plump and fruity scones hand decorated with cheeky cherry and almond faces!
Response from LeonardM8 Original Poster made on 30th Jan 2019 16:36:23
Thanks Carole, it's on my list of places to go now, even if it's just for the fat rascals. lol

If you go to Yorkshire also visit Knaresborough...the lovely Market Square and the view from the Castle ruins over the River Nidd to Mother Shipton's Cave...especially in Autumn...is a sight to remember! The trees and river..the bridge..Wonderful! I have travelled in Europe a lot...but that Knaresborough view took my breath away the first time I saw it!
Pop into the Gracious Street Methodist Hall and have a cup of tea and cakes...and a friendly welcome. I did it for the first time on a visit only last week!
Response from LeonardM8 Original Poster made on 6th Jul 2019 14:41:19
HI CAROLE B4 if I do get to that part of the country, I will certainly take a look at knaresborough, it sounds ideal for the type of scenery that I like to photograph,
thank you for taking the time to inform me and anyone else that sees this. many thanks Len

On todays showcase there is a photo of a lady sat on a crowded beach, she waS there when we arrived and it took her an hour to move, when she did move we had parked near a car which was hers, I asked her what she had been waiting for, her reply was someone might see me getting changed, just off a beach so packed with people, she did get changed and know one battered a eyelid.

On the subject of humour....have any of you ever driven up to Tourrettes sur Loup in the south of France? NB the very narrow streets and the difficulty of turning round to reverse your steps...(or car!) We had to keep going...barely room to get the car through and down the very steep incline. I can laugh about it now...especially my late husband's choice comments (in view of the name of the town!) all the way down...talk about a sign of relief at the bottom! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEY_oPUmB-s

On our fery first visit to the Republic of Ireland we went via holyhead to Dublin, the fist thing on arriving in Dublin was we got lost, they had closed a lot of the city roads off because of an event, we made our way towards Cork as we were staying near but the first confusion was that the main roads were signposted in kilometers and the side roads were in miles.
Cork is a nice place with lots of churches and bridges, I am informed that there are more bridges in Cork than there is in Venice, but a place well worth visiting

On one of our later visits to the Republic of Ireland we went on a coach trip, we visited the billeck pottery factory ( have I spelled that right ) and had .guided tour round the city wall of Derry which was very interesting, so we have walked all the way round Derry.
Response from CaroleAH made on 27th Feb 2019 08:53:20
Hi Archie,
It's Belleek and I'm sitting looking at the little vase which I bought when I toured the factory. What a fascinating place producing the almost translucent porcelain. My daughter was married in Derry and we walked round the walls one day - interesting city.

we prefered Guernsey to Jersy,Guernsey seems a lot quiter to mJersy, not as commersilised but Jersy is a nice lpace. The first time we went to Guernsey we were in a hotel in the same street as Victo Hugos house.
As for Shetland we went from Aberdeen on the ferry we drove up to Abereen a days journey and the the ovenight ferry to Lerwick,Shetland in a Peacefull island, no rushing a pushing, you are allowed to drive slowly and enjoy the views, we also went to Yell and Unst, if you ever get the chance it is well worth the effort, there is even a Tesco store in Lerwick.
Enogh for now and thank you for taking a interest.

Thanks for the information Archie - I will have to investigate further and get myself organised before I get much older! ๐Ÿ™‚ In the meantime I will have to content myself with watching "Shetland" on the TV and reading Ann Cleeves novels.

I have been to the Shetland Isles and the Orkney Isles ----- to the Channel isles, both Jersy and Guernsey to the outer hebridnees northern ireland and the Republic of Ireland and many, many places in England and Wales and what exiting place we live in, so much to see and so much to do.
Response from CaroleAH made on 23rd Feb 2019 11:32:44
Hi Archie,
I have been to both Jersey and Guernsey - think I preferred Jersey although loved my visit to Victor Hugo's house on Guernsey. My elder daughter lived near Derry for about five years and we loved going out to explore the area - bit hairy the first time we went as cars and lorries were being hi-jacked and burnt out so we had to ring a hot-line to see if the area we were going to visit was safe! Malin Head is beautiful as is Rathlin Island. The Shetland and Orkney Islands are on my bucket list of places to visit. Did you drive there yourself or go on an organised holiday? I wouldn't be too keen on driving all the way up to the ferry port from Yorkshire by myself.

Many years ago I visited the Andaman Islands - they belong to India but are nearer to Thailand. It was quite an experience, which I would not want to repeat, but I did manage to win a luxury weekend in Rome when I submitted an article to a Sunday Times Travel blog in which I recalled one day of my trip when we decided to take a taxi into Port Blair, the capital. Sitting having a coffee we heard fireworks and decided to go out on to the balcony to see what was going on. It was a funeral complete with the deceased on full display! After that we had a tour of the Circular Gaol - very interesting although we cringed at the treatment the prisoners meted out by the British, who occupied the islands until WW2. On the way back to our hotel the taxi driver, with his hand continuously on the horn in a vain attempt to scatter the water buffalo in the road, eventually collided with one of the beasts. Unfortunately, I had my car window down and its head came through so that we were almost nose to nose and it dribbled all over me! After checking that it was uninjured we went on our way but then ran over, and killed, a baby goat. I was upset by this but then, to crown it all, as we were going up a slight incline, the car ground to a halt. The driver gesticulated madly at the heavens and then leapt out of the car with a piece of string with a large metal bolt tied on the end - this was his petrol gauge and surprise, surprise - we had run out of petrol and could hear the bolt clanking on the metal sides of the petrol tank. We eventually got back to the hotel and I decided to freshen up and do my hair with the hot brush. Big mistake - when it came to unplugging it, the whole socket came out of the wall and the hotel was plunged into darkness. Later that evening we did our usual walk round the restaurant to find the table with the cleanest table cloth - this was supposed to be a luxury hotel not a back-packers hostel!
On a positive note the Indian people were very friendly - I don't think that, at that time, they saw many white tourists, so the children especially took every opportunity to say hello and stroke my hands! The scenery was magnificent and the sunsets at Chidiyatapu were a sight to behold. I'm glad that I went there (and won the holiday!) but nowadays I prefer to stay in the UK and discover new places, wonderful architecture and superb scenery. ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh my goodness Carole, that sounds like one heck of a holiday, I apologise now for laughing at your expense, but the way you've just wrote that, it comes across so funny. it could have been added into the real Marigold hotel script. it's so funny, apart from the dead animals. but it is good.
Response from CaroleAH made on 29th Jan 2019 17:56:04
No need to apologise, Len! It certainly was an experience ๐Ÿ™‚ I forgot to add that on our last day there we were having a walk on the beach and suddenly loads of uniformed personnel ( not sure if they were police, army or navy or all three) started to land on the beach, helicopter hovering overhead etc. We later found out that a young woman had been murdered and her body had been found on the beach further around the cove.

Hi Leonard
Great idea to exchange places of interest particularly within the U.K. I lived in Hampshire before moving to Dumfries and Galloway so am aware of the places you mention ,both counties well worth visiting. Everyone knows the Lake District is a beautiful place but people should explore the northern Lakes the areas around Penrith and Appleby are lovely and less overrun with tourists.
Response from ArchieUK made on 29th Jan 2019 11:45:24
I like the bit particularly "within the UK" and let us not forget the RoI, I am a bit c oncerned site about being hijacked by people who have never seen the UK but love but ignore this to boast about places they have visited on holiday but ignore this fantastic Island we live on.
When I put photographs up on showcase they all take by me in theUK and nothing copied from elsware.
I have traveled to many places in the UK & the RoI and I can tell many stories of the places we have visited if anyone is interested.

Hi to ecarg, and to you again Archie,
To you Ecarg, I say, I can well understand you moving to Southern Scotland, it is so beautiful, (like every where else, ) when the sun is shining, which I must say is a fair bit of the time in that area, depending on which side of the Criffell the clouds are,
we have been visiting for about 40 years now, and we've had some scorchers, I hope life is good for you there.

And Archie, I am sure we are all interested in stories you can tell us,
I hope you won't be put off, just because some people tell us about there travels abroad ?
It's a page where wide & diverse stories can be added.
These days my main interest is in travelling around our fair isle, but in the past, I have had some lovely holidays abroad, and a couple of bad one's, but all places and travel are up for discussion. lets stick with it, and have fun. I hope you will anyway..

Hi Lionel, a pleasure to hear from you, hope you'll be a regular on here,

that must have been some experience in the Czech Republic, I won't pretend to know anything about that part of the world, ( mostly the Med, Canada, And US ONCE only ) for us
But my Brother in-law, involved in film animatronics spent a good while there, and he said the same as you, he loved it, and the people he said were great

Right, I have just had my dippy eggs, ( why be grown up when it's so much fun acting childish ) so I'm ready to kick off on this subject ....

I live in mid Hampshire, my body is 69 years old, my mind is somewhere way younger. I live with my wife, my Son lives with us at the moment, we have two little dogs, and two cats. and for my privacy sake, that is all the personal info I will be giving....

I spent the last 45 years of working life (prior to retirement) working in and around Winchester, everyone knows where Winchester is so wont bother explaining,
But if you want to know anything about Winchester it may be worth while asking me ?

I have taken some basic photo's of Winchester, which I will probably put on the photo section at some time, photography being my favourite pass time.

but I do like to wonder GENTLY around the surrounding villages, in that area. again see photo page
you will see villages mentioned such as Easton, Itchenstoke, the small town of Alresford, village of Micheldever .
All of these are within easy reach of M3 jnc 9 at Winchester.

there is also some photo's taken in Southern Scotland, where we visit my wife's sister a couple of times a year.
there is New Abbey, about 9 miles out of Dumfries, half way between Dumfries and Southerness,
then there's Rockliffe about 7 or 8 miles past Southerness, and a little further on, on the same coast road is Kippford, thats the description of where they are, photo's will appear on the photo section in the near future.
well this has been quite a long introduction , but I hope lots of members will add their own info of places on hear soon. Len

PS sorry and please excuse my spelling and punctuation , I never was very good at grammar .....

Thank"s Sally, you did set one up for me a couple of days ago called places of interest, but me not knowing quite what I was doing, I buried it a bit deep, in the photography section, I think one will be seen by more people, once again Sally thank you
