Hi

I have just joined silver surfers. I have decided to make 2016 a life changing year. I am assessing my life, re- training and want to start travelling.

I have travelled very little but want to spend the next couple of years visiting and doing things that have sat on my bucket list for sometime!

I am keen to challenge myself by undertaking solo travel but I guess, would like to work up to that by taking a few trips with others.

I am open to suggestions on locations. I probably will not be available for travel until the end of the year.

Aha I see...
Well, I am looking for a travel companion to join a group maybe to travel around the uk, scotland, ireland, to see the ancient sites.
I am very interested in early history and have been reading a lot but not seen the places.
I am 69 year old and reasonably fit. I live in Norfolk.

I am married but we do our own thing most of the time as she is into our granddaughter big time and chooses to work full time. So I have a lot of free time! I've been thinking holidaying on my own isn't so great and maybe someone would like a holiday to share? I like being active and I'm kind of open-minded to Ideas. There are some self-guided cycling and walking/trekking holidays that would be good to share. Male or female...possible? tell me if it's realistic.

Anyone know when it would be a good time to visit New York for a 4/5 night stay. I was thinking of going mid to end of June. Also any suggestions as to where to stay and places to visit apart from the obvious tourist places. Thanks in advance, Alan
Response from Vanessa1 made on 24th Apr 2016 13:14:07
I am new to this site but I was wanting to spend a similar amount of time in New York around that time of year. I haven't been before but I did want to visit the Museum in New York to see my friends Design Fashion Exhibition which is being displayed between May and August so please let me know if you are interested.

Hi, I'm new to this Forum and hav'nt quite got the hang of it. I have been traveling one way or another all my life for work but for the last 15 yrs or so for fun. Even now I'm sat in a crowded bar in Spain listening to a rock and roll band and decided it would be worth sharing my lifestyle with the right like minded girl

I went to Cape Verde to the island of Sal, it isn't something I would recommend as there is nothing there, only thing happening was at the hotel complex. The island is mostly volcanic rock but Sal means Salt. Maybe other islands are nicer but I would give this one a miss.

Hi all I am new here, looking to find friend, companion for travel, weekends away or maybe longer, i'm located in oxfordshire
Response from sue2 made on 19th Mar 2016 07:29:11
Hi, I visited Cape Verde last year and I wouldn't recommend staying for more than a week. There is one main town which is really nice to look round, hiring a car is a must to see the rest of the area or a dune buggy, visit the salt flats too and watch the wind surfers but it doesn't take long - lots of development going on so might have changed a bit since I was there.
Response from pansypotter made on 14th Apr 2016 23:01:14
I heard it was boring as well but some people would disagree it's all individual taste

Hi James, sometimes when travelling solo though you get charged a supplement as you are taking up a possible rrom, so it makes sense to advertise for a buddy as i have done on here today for Iceland in 2017 :-}

I am 69 next month and am now fully retired. I have the usual prescriptions for blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes but these do not interfere with travel. My usual holiday companion has now exhausted her holiday entitlements from work and the next “ration” is now committed to her family so I am on the lookout for a new female companion who is solvent.
My background is in Education and Management Training and I kept on working on a part time basis up until last year. However I have definitely stopped now. Health and fitness are reasonable but I tend to de-select myself from anything that I might find dangerous or difficult. For example, when In Cambodia last year clambering round Angkor Wat I did not attempt all towers and temples. Markets and buildings are fine, but most of my interests are culinary rather than alcoholic and I am a big fan of the afternoon nap.
Places I have been to include Egypt (Nile and Cairo, not the red sea coast and Sharm/Sinai)
India. Most of it in the north and Goa, some parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu
Malaysia (west) KL and Pahang. Also Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. Morocco and Eritrea
European travel is limited to Genoa (frequent) and a few other places and some Greek Islands
I try to keep to four star hotels and with a judicious use of Laterooms.com and tripadvisor that can go to five star on occasion. For me, the big attraction of holiday companion is that it halves accommodation, taxi and guide costs. That is quite a saving and also allows us to avoid the riskier end of the accommodation spectrum.
I live in London and would obviously be keen to meet with any prospective travel companions. I am thinking about November time or even Christmas and for a month or so. I have the remnants of school French and some basic Hindi / Urdu.

Anybody want to educate me on solo travel ! New to site, is it as daunting as it sounds ?
Response from dibank made on 2nd Apr 2016 17:48:35
hi Gail solo travel is not as daunting as it seems.my advice is pick a reputable company and look at their solo holidays. Saga does a few .,that's how I started there are always people to chat too and become friends with but its not compulsory. you have your own rooms but are still operating as a group.it is up to yourself how much you want to mix with people but it is always nice to have meals etc together.
I have always managed to meet some really nice people and we have rubbed along together fine.
the tours are good too because if you are touring you are getting on and off transport all the time together and strike up friendships. There are nearly always people travelling on their own. With saga as you book you can as if there are other single travellers going.
Don't be afraid girl get out there and enjoy.!!!!!
Response from JAMES58 made on 8th Apr 2016 19:00:16
Hello Gail,,,re solo travel,,,there are various ways of doing it,i came on to find someone who wanted to do a bit of travel,a little different,,,i don,t do organised by companies,,,i always just book a flight online, then a bit nearer the time i will go on to the likes of Trivago and get a decent hotel for a good price,,,and i don,t normally just go to the one place for a week,,,i like to experience local life slightly more realistically, rather than what the tour operator wants you to see,,,,does this sound more like what you would enjoy??

I am a heterosexual male 71 years old, retired and solvent and reasonably fit to the extent I take no meds. I live in SW England and I just want to go somewhere warm and dry to escape our miserable climate.

I have been married 30 years but my wife seems more interested in dogs, playing tennis and bridge and the Church of England than me. She says she wants a divorce and I have agreed but I am still waiting to hear from her lawyers. There will be no money problems.

I don't dislike dogs. I just don't want to own a dog as its such a tie hence wife won't travel very far hence I have gotten used to taking holidays on my own. Last couple of times its been cruise ships.

I can play tennis sort of and golf. I am an OK Bridge player but only in non-competitive small doses

I am reasonably well educated, Edinburgh & Oxford and can listen and talk on most things. During the bad weather I am trying to learn to play the piano. As my last lesson was 63 years ago so I have a bit of catching up to do. I prefer opera to concerts and I prefer theatre to film. I am widely read and have a large fund of useless knowledge which qualifies me for the boring old farts club.

Hi!
I'm Debbie. I'm interested in all sorts of travel from Ireland road trips, lounging in the Mediterranean, or wine tours in Tuscany while staying in a rented villa. I've finished with cruises but would be up for all inclusives in most warm climates. I can travel alone but it's more fun sharing experiences.
I can do leisurely or high active trips.
I have no health restrictions, allergies or medication requirements.
Response from Laraine50 made on 7th Apr 2016 10:19:05
Hello, Debbie ...

I think we have a similar outlook to travel. This is GREAT news! Oh, perhaps I should say 'high active', for me, does not include white water rafting or climbing mountains. I love active in the sense of walking and/or seeing loads of wonderful things, cultural and Nature.

I too can do the lounging and chatting thingy, or road trips, or cultural exploration. I'm going to Florence and Tuscany in May (group thingy with a friend).Like you, I too can travel alone, which I enjoy. I guess it's the added expense that I'm not keen on.

I haven't been on any cruises, Somehow, they don't appeal? I could, of course, be wrong, but I sort of don't relish the thought of confinement in a limited space. It's fun to socialise whilst travelling. It's also good to get away from it!

I would really like to hear from you and explore whether we could become travel friends? I would welcome learning about your interests?

Oh! DO get back to me!

🙂

My friend and I have 24 metre canal barges in France. We have to have two people on board and we are looking for slim ladies to help us. Their own cabins with en suites are available.
It a great way to travel for painters and photographers to get a different view of France
