Why do singers and musicians so often wear hats on stage, and in public?

A case in point is Gregory Porter, he always wears what looks like a North Korean bin lorry drivers helmet. I mean, what is that all about?

its to stop the overhead lights blinding them, and/or the refection of the overhead lights from their bald spots blinding other people

Maybe the size of the hat is to make up for the lack of size elsewhere. I remember Jamiroquai had large hats, he was rather small in stature not sure about anywhere else

I believe Gregory Porter refers to it as his security blanket and his 'jazz hat' so maybe it helps him with his performance. As for other singers and musicians does it really matter the reason why?

It does matter because they often look so silly, just look at that pilchard will.i.am, he often appears on TV in way over the top spectacles and a hat, which I guess he thinks makes him look cool. It doesn't, he looks ridiculous, but then, if you have contrived a silly name for yourself you probably need to look equally silly too.

Can't argue with that as Boy George always looked as if he couldn't find a hat to fit him!

I alas am one if the unlucky ones. U have never found a hat that suits me, it is either my face or I have the wrong shaped head. Being performers maybe musicians are braver than me and don't care what they look like. Either that or it saves on combing the hair
