I have been pen palling for a while now does anyone else do this and is there somewhere on the site for this? It would be nice to write to people on here if they were interested.

When I was around 12yrs old I remember visiting Whitby with the school and I picked up a bottle on the beach with a message inside it was a girls name and her address somewhere in Wales. I wrote her and we passed messages for about 3yrs. Me being in a kind of boarding school it was a nice past time. Anyways when I eventually left school I just stopped writing her. I often wonder why I never kept it up and if the school had a pile of letters waiting for me to collect. Alas the school is no more and I out grew the pen pal writing and found football and bikes and girls..lol
But I remember it was great at the time, good luck to all you pp's out there I hope you find great companionship resulting from your pen's.

Have you heard of postcrossing.com. It is a site for sending and receiving postcards to and from strangers all over the world. It is not something I have done myself but I have a friend who does this. She loves to receive the postcards with messages from strangers

I love it when a real letter drops through the door. I understand lots of people prefer email but think a lot of that may be down to cost maybe. I don't personally do emails as I prefer a real letter. I am on facebook penpal groups and its amazing how many people still write letters. Can't beat sitting down with a cuppa and reading a letter someone has taken the time to sit and write or type. For me email is not the same as a real letter.

I use to write "snail mail" to people in my teens and early adulthood, although i would still love to communicate with others via this method, it is not an option for me. I still work full time and look after my grandaughter in the evenings so my time is limited, so conversing through emails is better and quicker for me.

I did join the site to connect with people mainly because i don't have a social life due to the above commitments, so in saying that if anyone would like an online pen pal PM me and i will give you my email address, would be great to chat to new people.

Hi Meeka, I am interested in pen friendship. I have been snailing to friends since the age of 9. I still have 6 friends in Europe; UK and Australia. All told I have had more than 400 penpals since the time I started writing to people. Most of my friends were much older than me and some have passed away. I have also visited some of them during this time. Vasu23,

I've just been directed to this site today by a friend and I think penpal are an excellent way to get to know people and make new friends. You get to know folks from the inside out rather than making assumptions on a live meeting and missing out on making a good friend. I would be happy if anyone wanted to contact me to exchange news and find out more about towns interests etc. I live in Scotland... my email is suejzee@hotmail.com

I'm with you there Kathleen. Cant we chat through this forum instead of exposing our email addresses?

The art of penmanship has always eluded me then in the 80s along came computers whoopee doo spell check was still the good old Oxford dictionary. Then slowly the web evolved and emails could be sent and received, I put my email address in birthday and Christmas cards and sat back to see if my friends would email me, they did, slowly my email address box grew to over 200 as friends of friends began to email me. To some it was a novelty so over 30 years my email address book has shrunk to 20. Face book took most then twitter, Skype well that is a very overstated and can ruin good friendships.
I love to hear from people young and old, after I retired early with ill health from local government my wife and I took up a lovely job as caravan park wardens, and I still work part time as a warden I even wrote a book, “A journey to a new life style”.

I would be only too happy to have a couple of email pals. Apart from bills and adverts I don't think there is much use for snail mail anymore. If you would like to contact me my address is mouster1234@yahoo.co.za

It's an interesting proposition Meeka. I just got on here a few days ago. I was looking for a chat room but I haven't found one yet where cliques don't develope STRONG political views and being well read is looked down upon. Pen Paling runs the risk of exposing ones email and if one deals in proprietary matters that is an unreasonable risk. Plus via chat; assuming open minds, one can get a variety of responses and insights on issues that can be very valuable.

I still write (well type) letters, I do have e-mail addresses for some of my pals but we still use good old snail mail. I started many years ago with International Pen Pals (I think that they are still in existence) and was given a list of eighteen people to write to, in return my name and address was be given to eighteen more people so that they could write to me. It was good fun receiving these letters from all over the world, now some have fallen by the wayside but the rest of us still enjoy sending and receiving 'proper' letters.

Think it would be great to have pen pals on line in several countries . No one seems to bother to send letters and personally I find my typical mail of bill, advert, advert, advert very boring. Certainly help to keep the mind active along with the online Scrabble on facebook 🙂

I do think people use technology more to communicate and letter writing has become something of a dying art. I have 30 penpals and love writing and receiving letters much nicer than bills and junk mail.

Hello Meeka, A very interesting question http://www.silversurfers.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif" alt=";)" class="spSmiley" /> keep an eye out for some response ... there is no other area on our website for writing letters to people, but you are welcome to communicate via our forum. I wonder if technology has made people more likely to communicate to their pen pals via email now?
