Just joined so I'm introducing myself.

I will be 67 next month and retired from the many different jobs in my working life. I guess that I didn’t ever find my calling. I went to university at age 59 but when it was over it was too late to launch a new career. I wanted to lecture but students don’t want to listen to old fogies, so sadly I put aside that idea and settled into life as an eccentric dog owner.

I live in a beautiful Lancashire valley surrounded by hills that demand they be walked/climbed, how could I refuse?

I would like to do a bit of cycle touring but a recent diagnosis of spondylosis and some hip pain means that I may not be doing a world tour anytime soon!

I’m keen to make some friends as I have been on my own for a very long time now, my daughters don’t bother much with me and I don’t have a partner.I didn’t expect to be so isolated at this time in my life, isn’t it strange the way family and friends seem to forget us when we get past 60?

I will pop in regularly and hope to strike up some friendships.

Hi Brian I agree it is a bit complex to begin with. I just explored it to begin with and when you have done that you can then understand the bigger picture. Don't forget that you can always click on the Forum Home and that will get you back to the starting point. I've applied for my discount card that should be arriving in the mail soon. I would suggest you take a look at this if you have not already done so. Good luck with finding your way around and to conversing on subjects that we both are interested in Regards John

Hi everyone, I'm new to this , I am retiring on the 25th August and came across this site and thought I would give it a try. I'm 67 and quite scared as I don't know how I'm going to fill my days, but at the same time excited. For the past 13 years I have been a cook for a Hostel for homeless men, and really enjoyed it, but trouble with my knee and hip forces me to slow down. I do have a few hobbies lined up as I love arts and crafts. , In the past I have done cake decorating and now I am having a go at making jewellery.

I would love to chat to like minded people , and find out how they fill their time and what hobbies they have.

Hi all. I've just joined and wishing to introduce myself. I'm 71 and live in Berkshire with my wife who hails from Greece. I originally came from Fulham in London. My interests are broad ranging and include family history research, music, DIY and eating out. I enjoy playing online Words with Friends and play with an old school friend in Canada and a friend in New York. I would be particularly interested in making contact with anybody in California who has a passion for family history research as I'm researching my Great Aunt who left the UK for San Francisco early last century. I shall also be interested in learning DIY tricks and sharing those I have learnt over the years. That's it for now and I look forward to striking up many friendships. Cheers John

Hi, I've just joined the forum. I'm Erith, and I live in Edinburgh. I've been retired 6 years.

My husband and I love to travel. January found us in New Zealand, and we have just booked 5 weeks in Madrid, September / October

I am a keen metalworker, making all sorts of things large (copper candelabra 5ft tall) and small (silver jewellery). I also enjoy making patchworks for every new baby that arrives within my family and friend circle.

I recently started a blog on making the most of my retirement, and only stumbled across this forum when looking for other blogs in the UK retirement space. I come from a long line of ninety year olds, so I anticipate another 30 years or so, which is half my life again - hence the desire to make the most of it!

I am not familiar with internet not much but I need to some one to talk to. I am trying to hold on to God's words for every situation but sometime I get confused and can't find answer.

I like to find spiritual people who can help me out when I need help spiritually and be honest.

I am a Korean-American so I am not perfect in so many ways to communicate but I hoping to find good truthful spiritual friend.

I am an old and broken down person only my hope is in Jesus Christ.

Hi Guys,
Not sure about doing this, but here goes.
I took an early retirement this Spring from what was a pretty Stress filled career.
I've been off now for two months and already I love Not having the day to day business responsibilities.
Smiling again, I have begun to enjoy myself and relax.
Have met up with a few old friends from years ago and have started playing golf again.
I used to travel for work, but I still want to do a little more, but not necessarily alone.
We shall see.
Cheers
Steve

I am 51 and after recently joining the gym they made me aware of Silver Surfers. At first I felt like I'm not old enough for this but during the last couple of years I really believe you do start to change your way of viewing life and the World and after exploring I think this is such a great idea to meet like minded people. I have been mostly a stay at home mum my children are all grown now and I am grandma to one child. I have so much to give and found it quite difficult to find a job, nobody seems to want the over 50's. My life skills are so valuable and I feel a little like I'm on the scrap heap. I had my own florist shop a couple of years ago after qualifying as a florist three years ago but it was such hard work and of course the family didn't adapt to me working, so I had to continue taking care of everyone else as well as running a full time business. It's a very frustrating time in a woman's life where you don't really know where you belong? Advice, new friends, very welcome.

Hi Folks, just joined a few moments ago. I am extremely lonely as I am working on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland away from family and friends. So today I decided to do something positive. In the past two weeks I had to get another home on the mainland for my beloved dog as she started biting people so I am heartbroken.
I love learning about people and their way of life.
I like walking (could do a bit more) watching documentaries about antiquity and psychological thrillers.
Hope by joining it will keep me connected and take the edge of the lonliness

Hi everyone, I joined this site a while ago but have only just braved coming on the forum. I'm 54 years, married with 2 grown up children. One married and living in the UK and the other is still at home with us as it's so expensive to branch out on your own here. I live on the island of Guernsey, Channel Islands. I love chatting with people and learning about their lives elsewhere. If you want to know anything about me just ask 🙂 I love holidays, knitting, reading, running our local toddler group, attending church events and helping my daughter out with her childminding business. I look forward to meeting some of you!
Response from CaroleAH made on 17th Jun 2017 00:17:06
Hi Angela,
Welcome to Silversurfers - hope you find plenty of topics of interest to comment on and join in with. We are a friendly bunch 🙂 Whereabouts on Guernsey do you live? I had a holiday there a few years ago and had a fascinating tour round Victor Hugo's house in St Peter Port and also saw the little chapel in Les Vauxbelets. The island is beautiful, especially the coastline.
Response from georgesmum made on 17th Jun 2017 14:59:39
Hi Angela,
Welcome to the site. What a wonderful part of the world you live in, I would never want to leave!
Sounds as if you lead a very busy life, especially caring for all the little ones.
I too am an avid knitter but unlike you I tend to collect dogs rather than children! I do have two small grandsons aged 3 and 18 months and love being grandma when I get to see them, which isn't as often as I'd like because they live some distance away.
Hope you get chatting to lots of different people.
Take care

Hello,

I just now joined this site. I'm an American (maybe the only one on here lol) who has travelled quite a bit overseas and loves it there; most recently went to Germany and if I ever win the lottery will move there. My mother is British and would join me. : )

I'm 50, turning 51 in July, am single, work full-time and would like to strike up some new friendships. I like to read, go to museums, camp, watch movies.

Hope to chat with some folks soon.

I wonder if you are using iPads/tablets whilst you are looking at Silversurfers. I usually use my PC and can find things fairly easily but I haven't a cat in hell's chance on my iPad as nothing seems to be where it should be! 🙁
Response from georgesmum made on 11th Jun 2017 17:49:00
Maybe that's the problem..... I rarely use my laptop these days because like me, it's getting a bit slower! I'd better dust it off and give it a try.

Know what you mean about being lonely I live in Bedford it's even lonely here or is it me, every body is rushing about don't really know where to go to meet people.

Hi Dianelily,
Welcome to the site.....I joined several years ago when the site was in its original format...we all moaned and groaned about it then but I have to admit I find it even more confusing to navigate now so believe me you are not alone in having problems finding your way around!
Hope you find lots of people to chat to on here.
