Car Parking at Hospitals

Am I being unreasonable? One of my biggest bugbears is the fact that most hospitals have a car park charging system. This irritates me on two levels. Firstly if you are going to the hospital for an appointment, and there is a prepay system in place, how do you know how long you will be there, which then adds to the stress of a visit, if you overstay your paid parking. Secondly, that you actually have to pay to visit a patient in hospital, especially if they are there for a few days or weeks. Does this system seem fair?

I agree with you that Hospital car parks should be free to patients especially if you are a weekly visitor. Unfortunately pigs will fly before the NHS will allow free parking. They are getting a large revenue from the unfair car parking charge. They have no sense of fair play they even charge disabled blue badge holders.

I so agree. Almost 4 years ago to the day my husband broke his leg and had to be admitted to hospital/ I drove him to a fracture clinic, from which he was immediately booked in as an inpatient. As one does, this process took many hours. When I eventually returned to our car, I was met with a ticket bill of £11.50! As we are both senior citizens, I thought this heartless and daylight robbery. The hospital Trust had sold their car park to get in some badly needed money, and the car parking Q-Parks are making a fortune out of peoples misfortune and misery. Disgusting! :((

Yes, Sueki4. Not only do we (in Scotland) have free parking at hospitals, but free prescriptions and free eye tests. I don't want anyone to jump up and down about what the Scots have, but instead lobby your MPs to bring England up to the same standards as the rest of the UK. You can also mention bus passes at 60 and no bridge tolls.

I totally agree. My husband was having regular chemo. You had to pay for a ticket for the first 3 hours and then after that you could get a note from reception for the windscreen....which often involved walking up to half a mile back to the car and then back to the unit.

Once a very sick man staggered to reception, late for his appointment because he had been unable to find a space (another problem). He said the day before he had received a parking ticket and if it happened again he wouldn't be returning. A monstrous state of affairs. Our local hospital has sold off its land for housing and a supermarket so parking is always hard to find.

Scotland and Wales have free hospital parking, why not England?

It's an absolute scandal charging to visit people in hospital.

We did manage to wangle some free parking once but it involved me spending time in intensive care.

Now isn't that nice and friendly 😕 😡

I totally agree with you ... I don't think you should have to pay at hospital car parks ... Think this should be one place where it is free to park, as you are either there to visit someone, or you have an appointment. Especially if you have a family member in hospital for a long period of time; it can get really costly! 😡
