True Wealth

I Dreamt Last Night

I dreamt last night of riches
Of wealth and power and fame
I had far more than I needed
More if I wished to claim
My jet flew ‘cross the oceans
I spoke to Stars and Kings
I thought that I was happy
I owned ‘Life’s Everythings’.

This morning when I raised my head
From sleep’s warm, clinging hold
I saw the young sun shining
And realised my gold
Was swaddled in the bedclothes
Right there beside of me
A pleasure and a treasure
Worth more than fantasy

Twisted values that men strive for
Just to wonder when they gain
If the effort has been worth it,
Has the struggle been in vain.
I’m happy with the cards I’m dealt
With this hand I hold
My woman and my family
Are worth more than any gold

Originally from Guernsey, but now living in Sussex, UK, I started writing poems and song lyrics when I was 16 or 17. I celebrated my 70th birthday last year, and am hoping that I've improved a little during the years between. Been published and also broadcast on local radio. Would love to be rich just so that I could visit Canada more often.
