The Memorial
In exactly 7 days time this country will be commemorating the end of World War One and Two, also, all other conflicts from 1945 onwards.
We will be honouring those brave men and women who fell and all those husbands, sons, and brothers who fought for our freedom.
For the next 7 days I will post one of my own poems from my book World War One in Verse, If you want a copy of my book please inbox me, these are some of my poems and they are my personal way of remembering..
The Memorial
Outside the cold grey slab of stone,
Where friends once stood, he stands alone,
His frame now bent, stick at his side,
Yet tall he stands – face full of pride,
His war long over, freedom won,
He stands alone, old friends long gone.
The shadow cast of recent time,
And wars fought now as church bells chime,
The soldier poised with gun in hand,
Waits silently for his command,
And guards the old man standing proud,
As bugler plays ‘Last Post’ aloud.
Not much between them through the years,
For they’ve both fought and shed their tears,
The shadow falls on men who died,
Where mason carved their names with pride,
Both fought for what they thought was true,
But, who stands in the shadow of who?
