Sidmouth Beach

This poem was written by Yvonne Rautenbach about the lovely place she has just moved to in retirement.  Sidmouth is tailor made for retirement with a great bus service to pretty places, lots of public loos and coffee shops and parks and the wonderful scenic beach and coastline which is described below.

Sidmouth Beach

It is always beside me reflecting my dreams
Ever a sighing or shouting its themes
Obsessions with driftwood and intricate stones
Serving them up with the scuttle and bones
Giving and taking with fingers and arms
Spreading its jewels in the crash and the calms
It’s always beside me enchanting my soul
Stirring up feelings shored up in my whole
Hinting at dolphins, seals and sharks
Vaguely aware of those bouys in the dark
Cormorant, jubilant diving for prawns
Petulant gulls gobble up on the lawns
Deadheading the jellies on toothridden rocks
It’s always beside me, colluding with clocks
Shelling out crabs in the pits of the tides
Taking the one legged shoes for a ride and
Clearing the decks of the holiday rush
Lightening the load of the man with a brush
And as the day ends there’s a gull whistle screech
It’s always beside me in Sidmouth – the beach.

I am always making something out of nothing. Last week i made a beachhut doorstop/bookend from a house brick and an old striped shirt. Most days I walk or bike a mile or so to our beach and shop daily for fresh food at nearby Lidl and Waitrose plus COOP, Tesco and Spar - always scouting for bargains. I paint, draw or photograph all of my profile pictures myself and when inspired I write a poem about my environment. I go for long walks almost daily to the beach . My husband likes making mini robots and electronic devices and would like to hear from anyone in Exeter with same interests. We are really enjoying his first year of retirement in Sidmouth and never been so happy in our lives.
