Old Age
This poignant poem was written by Mick Johns about how old age creeps up and the fear of loneliness can take over …
Old Age
As the time goes slowly by,
And no matter how you try,
To hold back, those advancing years,
Old age comes and brings the tears.
When as you sit there all alone,
And wonder where the days have flown,
When older folks have passed away,
All you can do is sit and pray
Your children will still want you near,
For loneliness is one great fear
That grows upon you week by week,
And makes the future seem quite bleak,
If only they would come and visit,
They used to once, but now, why is it?
They cannot seem to spare the time,
To ask them to, seems such a crime.
When tomorrow comes around,
I’ll sit here quietly, not a sound,
And listen, hoping for a sign
Of children laughing, maybe mine
As they call round in Sunday best
And set my troubled heart at rest.
Oh dear God please let them know
That I love and miss them so,
And when my time is finally here,
I’d like them all to shed a tear,
For as they stand beside my grave,
Remembering all the love I gave,
They’ll know that even though I’ve gone,
My love for them still lingers on.
