Memories of teenage years

Memories of teenage years

The youth club was the where we all went,
Music on the jukebox, had us heaven sent.
We liked to jive, rock and roll to the beat,
The floor was pounded by our dancing feet.

The music turned slower,
We turned the lights lower.
You saw a boy, handsome with dark hair,
He looked so good, you just had to stare.

He came over and asked you for a dance,
With fluttering heart, here was your chance.
You started to date, he had a winning smile,
You talked and walked for many a happy mile.

You were smitten, he said he felt the same,
Till the big romance became just a game.
He bought a motorbike, went off with his mate,
You stood and watched by your garden gate.

He said he would meet you time and again,
You waited for him to come down the lane.
At last you told him you would wait no more,
He must turn up on time, knock on your door.

That night came, you waited hours in vain,
No motorbike came roaring down the lane.
Later that night, a heavy knock at the door,
His mate said “he wouldn’t be coming to call”

He had raced his bike to get there on time,
An accident happened, his friend called 999.
He survived the crash but was broken and ill,
He didn’t want to see you, a bittersweet pill.

Then when you got old, a phone call you had,
A well known voice, that sounded so sad.
He wanted to meet you one last time,
He wanted to talk, you said “okay fine”

It had been 55 years since you had met,
You looked around, couldn’t see him yet.
That couldn’t be him, the boy of your dreams,
He looked so old, falling apart at the seams.

He tells you he has loved you all this time,
His life is nearly over, he needs you to know.
He had thought about you all these years,
He was sorry it had ended in your tears.

You are happily married, had a great life,
He was single, never married or had a wife.
He had been young with too much pride,
He wished he asked you to be his bride.

How very sad his life turned out to be,
All those years spent thinking of me.
As a young girl you had cried over him,
Now he’s crying over what might have been.

You knew you would never see him again,
You could see he was in a lot of pain.
You said your goodbyes, he walked away
To live with his regrets for another day.
