ME/CFS Awareness

It is ME/CFS awareness day tomorrow, 12th May, so I am sharing my poem to highlight how it can come about and to spread awareness to help find a definite cause and cure

ME/CFS Awareness

Always worked and played hard, was doing fine
Then something happened to change this life of mine
Think I had a virus or infection and took to my bed
After a few weeks was still feeling half dead

Awoke one morning unable to figure out
How to make coffee and toast, what was that about
Brain started misfiring, was I losing the plot
What is this thing I now have got

From being near the top of every game I played
Mistake after mistake my brain now made
After any activity, pleasure or strain, struggling to recover
Day after day, facing this over and over

Unable at times to raise my weary head
When before always rising very early from my bed
Days turned into weeks, weeks into years
Along the way, a few tears and many fears

Went to the docs time and time again
A few things showed up to explain the pain
Knew deep down this was not the whole tale
Of a life turned sideways and going off the rail

Finally the tide turned, I wasn’t going mad
Had an answer at last and felt so glad
All that time gone fast, then getting told it is ME/CFS
It really is so hard to understand I guess

Learning to pace and living often in the slow lane
Hoping one day I will always be fast again
Being back on the right track
Always moving forward , no setback

There are millions of us in the world around
Will be many more, no answer for them yet found
Awareness is vital. On this May day it is key
To help find a cause and cure to set people free
