Lest we forget
Lest we forget
A soft whistle getting louder as it goes up the line.
The men lined up waiting.
The sergeant looks at his watch.
Right lads , over the top he shouts.
We climb the ladders helping others.
I am over the top holding my gun.
I run crouching, others walk tall.
I hear screams of the dying and moans of the wounded.
Then there is silence.
I can’t see where I am.
I hear a voice shouting come back lads, retreat.
I lie down and pull myself along.
A hand grabs mine, I look and see
A drying comrade.
He tries to speak but no words come.
I crawl over the dead.
Thousands have died
For what.
We gained nothing just death.
Such is the futility of war.
Remember.
