Dogs of War

Dogs of War

Oh you, who unleash the vengeful dogs of war
Harvesters of souls of millions and millions more
A plague on mankind for which there is no cure
Of possessions and power, you keep full score
Death and destruction scattered, litter every shore
Our cries lost in the wind of “no more, no more!”

The past glorified in history books of battles fought and won
Hundreds of years of pain and grieving for loss of loved ones
But what of the brave who for freedom went to fight
Protectors of their country, families and to do what is right?
Sacrificing themselves on the altar of eternal hope
That wars would end and peace emerge from clouds of smoke

Who then will speak for those of rational mind?
Who then will stop all wars and the culling of mankind?
The best we can do is to honour those who fell
Drop coins of sadness in tins for the poppies that they sell
Each year we honour those who died in years gone by
Yet still the dogs of war are unleashed in full and ravenous cry.
