A poem for my sister for her 50th birthday

My Sister

Well would you believe it the year is 2001
And it was 50 years ago, that your life first begun
There have been so many memories picked up along the way
And here’s some to remember, today on your birthday

The earliest childhood memory I have of you and me
Is playing in the garden, you were five and I was three
We didn’t have a paddling pool but had an old tin bath
Splashing one and other, oh how we did laugh

As for our favorite pastime it really had to be
Packing up some sandwiches and going to the sea
We were in the sidecar, and on the back rode mum
On dads old trusty motorbike we headed for the sun

Every year the 1st of May we went to the swimming pool
No matter what the weather, we went there after school
The water it was freezing just 54 degrees
We went in very coyly with a shaking of the knees

Then as we got older, we often walked to town
We met our friends in the Polar Bear and did the gossip round
Or maybe to the pictures, just sixpence for a seat
Paying thrupence extra would get you upstairs- a real treat!

Guy Fawkes is a special night the whole town celebrates
There’s dressing up and fireworks well into the night
One year, I remember, you dressed as an Arab girl
And into your belly button you even placed a pearl

Well times moved on your older now, you have had a varied life
You’ve settled down, have married are a mother and a wife
You have become successful in everything you do
And I feel very lucky my childhood was with you
