Intensive care

You’ll never understand unless you’ve been there!

Intensive care

The pain that families have to bear, waiting, pacing, drinking tea.
Is that nurse coming for me or another family?
Waiting to see their loved ones in intensive care,
who are each there for a different reason but for one same goal.
To restore their health to make them whole.

We wait, we pace, we drink tea. Is she coming for me or maybe Harry?
The stranger who reminds me of my Dad.
He wears the same cardie he looks so sad.
His wife’s been through so much but now there’s hope.
We chat about things he can’t tell his family.
I give him a hug and tell him my name’s Emily.

Then off he goes with love in his heart and now the nurse calls my name,
he’s really helped to ease my pain.
I put on my smile as I walk through the doors,
she’s a bit better today, I can’t ask for more.
I watch the nurses do their job, taking blood, checking gases.

So busy running here and there. Always smiling though they’re probably knackered.
Hours later I leave, we’ve laughed, I’ve cried so she couldn’t see.
I feel so guilty having to go home to my family!
Wish I could split myself in two so I could be by her side constantly.
It’s been another day in intensive care.
You’ll never understand unless you’ve been there!

I'm a 56 year old Mum of 2. I enjoy writing poetry about my first hand experiences. My parents both passed away within 5 weeks of each other and with the help of a dear friend John I was able to visit my Dad's family home in Ireland. I have a sausage dog aged 6 who is partly disabled after being paralysed 18 months ago. Thankfully he can now wobbly walk after a long period of rehabilitation. I also enjoy gardening and going to concerts and eating out with friends and family.
