Close all the Curtains
3 days to go, this is written for every man and woman who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country in any conflict throughout the world.
There was a sort of jubilation felt by our families when war was declared in 1914, hunger was rife and work was scarce, so war was welcomed, by closing the curtains I mean closing their eyes, the poem depicts the aftermath and what I think would have been the feelings of most of those families. Close all the Curtains
Close all the curtains, don’t let them see
what has become of you and of me,
Let those confounded battle winds blow
let all those hot embers continue to glow,
Let men blow their bugles over our head
blast out the last post – for our glorious dead.
Those tired marching boots stirring the dust
of old memories and a long lost trust,
Those sons of mothers – marching along
escorted by a heavenly throng,
Climbing those stairs to be with their God
following where their ancestors trod.
So, draw those curtains, let no-one look in
at these deathly corpses, so young – so thin,
They walk cratered roads, these selfless dead
the same roads where living fear to tread,
Wait! Open those curtains, bring us more war
Isn’t war what we wanted? – then who could ask more.
