Angels Wear White Feathers

Angels Wear White Feathers

Polly and me had just got wed when I marched off to war.
I’d seen barely 18 summers, I’d not left home before.
I swore to serve King and Country I made a solemn vow.
It was a bit of jape and a bit of a lark but I’m not laughing now.

I saw my best pal Billy hit by an enemy shell,
a bit of a jape a bit of a lark but now he’s blown to hell.
As I looked around the blood drenched trench and saw the dying and the dead,
with screams and shellfire in my ears I turned tail and fled.

The Padre saw my stumbling flight and led me back somehow …..
It was a bit of a jape a bit of a lark but nobody’s laughing now.
My Polly received a letter one 1916 morn.
Blind terror was my only crime but I was shot at dawn.
