The Memorial
In Honour of those who gave us our freedom 75 years ago today
The Memorial
Outside the cold grey slab of stone,
Where friends once stood, he stands alone,
His frame now bent, stick at his side,
Yet tall he stands – face full of pride,
His war long over, his freedom won,
He stands alone, old friends long gone.
The shadow cast of recent time,
And wars fought now as church bells chime,
The soldier poised with gun in hand,
Waits silently for his command,
And guards the old man standing proud,
As bugler plays ‘Last Post’ aloud.
Not much between them through the years,
For they’ve both fought and shed their tears,
The shadow falls on men who died,
Where mason carved their names with pride,
Both fought for what they thought was true,
But, who stands in the shadow of who?
This wonderful image moved me so much, I hope I have done it justice.
