The Last Post
The Last Post
From boy to man how quick you’ve grown
in muddy fields you’ve learned to hone,
Those skills, allowing you to live
you’ve given all you had to give,
In six months since this war was waged
how you’ve matured, how you have aged,
The rain beats down on sodden face
your heart it races at a pace
The last post sounds your fighting’s done,
Sleep well my boy your war is won,
The battlefields awash with red,
As poppies guard the glorious dead,
Sleep silent lad – until the morn,
When reveille sounds….. rise at dawn,
If you should fail, not pass the test,
Then go – enjoy – eternal rest.
