Down memory lane …

A Trip down memory lane …

Janet stood alone and still, in the middle of the fair,
Listening to all the sounds, she could only stare.
The Hurley burly kaleidoscope of noise fell away
As she let her mind wander to that long ago day.

She was just 15, excited to be out on her own,
Her mom and dad had decided to stay at home.
They knew she’d be safe, they came here every year,
Their caravan was close by, there was nothing to fear.

The Walters beckoned, with their music so loud,
Onto the Waltzers, held on tight, feeling proud.
A dark haired young man came to take her money,
The smile he gave her was warm, open and sunny.

He came to her time and again, to give her an extra twirl,
He laughed and flirted, smitten by this pretty young girl.
He finished his work, they talked and talked,
Through the fairground they walked and walked.

He bought her a candy floss, colours of pink and blue.
Then he turned to her and said “I think I love you”
He walked her home, stole a sweet goodnight kiss,
She lay awake., remembering, it was sheer bliss.

Every day of the holiday she went back to the fair,
She met up with Dan who was waiting for her there.
Now 50 years later she stood back in that place,
Recalling it all, she could still see Dan’s lovely face.

Through the crowds came a silver haired man,
Yes, you’ve guessed it was an older Dan.
He had bought for Janet her favourite treat,
Coloured candy floss, all sugary and sweet.

Their Golden Wedding, they had returned to Porthcawl
So nostalgic, so romantic, to reminisce and remember it all.
Their children wanted them to have an anniversary do,
“No” they said “going to Porthcawl is what we shall do.”

No fancy holiday abroad or cruise ship for us,
We’ll pack our bags and go to Wales on the bus!
