Ghost Trains

Ghost Trains

I hear the Ghost trains thund’ring through
My memories tonight
Past the haunted Signal Box
Through stations dead as night

They’re hauling dreams I once believed
Would reach their journey’s end
But like my dreams it seems the train
De-railed just round the bend

The shade of an old conductor
Blew his whistle and cried “Let’s go”
My dreams seemed bright and fertile,
Strong as the old logo

Of staunch and solid British Rail
Before the treacherous cuts
But English Spirit can’t be beat
And though the branches shut

The ghost trains still are thundering through
Brass Nameplates brightly shine
Steam and metal, flames and soot
And reveries of mine.

Originally from Guernsey, but now living in Sussex, UK, I started writing poems and song lyrics when I was 16 or 17. I celebrated my 70th birthday last year, and am hoping that I've improved a little during the years between. Been published and also broadcast on local radio. Would love to be rich just so that I could visit Canada more often.
