Remember
Remember
I can’t see the sky, I don’t know if it’s blue.
All I see is smoke and dry dust rising.
I can’t hear the birds only the sound of gunfire.
Do they still sing?
The whistle blows a shout goes up, over the top, over the top lads.
We scramble up some helping the others. Some kiss their crosses and others say prayers.
I am over the top and pointing my gun and suddenly I lie dead on the ground.
I stand up and look and am joined by the others, an army of ghosts.
Looking around.
I see comrades who fall calling for mothers who will never come.
I see a green field and I walk with the others. I lie down on the grass and see the blue sky. I hear the birds as I close my eyes. My final sleep.
I am not known just one of thousands but try to remember that we gave our young lives.
Remember.
