The Wolf-Dogs

The Wolf-Dogs

I  strolled  the  lanes  and  wandered  over  Downs
The  blackthorn  blossomed  in  the  leafless  hedge
I   topped  the rise  and  there  before  and  everywhere  around
The  sheep  were  grazing  from  field’s  edge  to  edgeThe  quiet  peaceful  scene  was  sudden  blown
A  dog  burst  in  the  field  unleashed  and  free
To  chase  the  helpless  ewes and  sheep  ungrown
And  kill  and  damage  more  than  we  can  see

That  dog  at  home  is  gentle,  warm  and  kind
A  loving  face  it  shows  it’s  family
A  more  loyal,  faithful  soul  you’d  never  find
Yet  Wolf   is  lurking  in  his  ancestry

In  his  genes  is  instinct  for  the  chase
And  for  the  kill;  it’s  only  Nature’s  way
Please  understand  and  keep  him  on  a  lead
So  he  and  livestock  live  another  day.

Originally from Guernsey, but now living in Sussex, UK, I started writing poems and song lyrics when I was 16 or 17. I celebrated my 70th birthday last year, and am hoping that I've improved a little during the years between. Been published and also broadcast on local radio. Would love to be rich just so that I could visit Canada more often.
