Control
Control
Viewing the scene of the Irish coast
Watching the fishermen as they boast
Of the size of the fish they have caught
Fresher than anything that can be bought
The crashing waves break and fall
High above the defence sea wall
I dwell on how the tides rule our weather
Sun, Moon, Seas working together
The Gormley statues all disappear
Until I can’t see even an ear
Now they are gone hidden below
The Irish seas ferocious flow
Star, my dog, running through the dunes
Amongst the bricks from the wartime ruins
Searching for driftwood for my pebble garden
The wind freezing my ears until they harden
I stop for moment on a thought to dwell
Perhaps, maybe, a fear or two to quell
I wonder why we don’t harness this power
To give us the fuel that we waste each hour
Surely, as with the rivers, it can be made
So there is no need for green fields to raid
Perhaps this would be too immense
The powers of the Cosmos too intense
Easier ever to deplete our natural resources
Than to seek out more earth friendly sources
Being neither inventor nor engineer
To me therefore it all seems quite clear
Tether the power of those crashing waves
Try anything if our planet it saves
Too hard to be done I hear them shout
Shut up woman you have no clout
You know nothing of fuel and profit margins
There are no real customer bargains
Just fat cats getting ever fatter
As our beautiful countryside they batter
Then at last we went back to the car
Trevor and me and our dog Star
Hair on end and cheeks bright red
He is laughing at all that I have said
Homeward bound we brave the weather
We are happy just to be together
The debate let go until another day
I dream I will make these politicians pay
Until then I will just put pen to paper
Where my thoughts just run and caper
How lucky am I to be able to do this
Bringing my mind blessed release
