The 4 Best Food Markets in Europe
What better way to explore a country’s culture than through their food?
Go on a culinary journey through Europe with our take on the best food markets on the continent.
1. Mercado San Miguel – Madrid
Open for over 100 years, you can grab a taste of every corner of Spain under this roof, from La Mancha cheese to Iberian ham. You can’t go wrong with a couple of banderillas and a glass of vermouth, the sweetness of the drink just cutting through the saltiness of the food. Just over 30 minutes from Madrid–Barajas airport by train, it’s perfectly located to grab some snacks for the plane home too.
2. Torvehallerne – Copenhagen
Handily located next to Nørreport Station this covered food market has some of the best food in the Danish capital, with gastronomic delights at every turn. For breakfast we’d recommend stopping by GRØD, with its healthy and simple Scandi inspired porridge. Whilst in Denmark you must try a classic open topped sandwich; head over to Hallernes Smørrebrød for some of the best here. We highly recommend the fiskefilet, breaded plaice served with lemon and remoulade. Simple, fresh, and delicious.
3. The Quadrilatero – Bologna
Emilia-Romagna is the birthplace of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, Parma ham, and balsamic vinegar, putting Italy on the map as a foodie heaven. So, it’s no shock that Bologna’s city centre has some of the best street food in Italy. Delis, butchers, and bars line the narrows streets, perfect for exploring. Be sure to swing by Salumeria Simoni for an amazing range of local meats and cheeses.
4. The Old Market Hall – Helsinki
Serving food up since 1889, this Helsinki institution is just a ten-minute walk from Helsinki Central Station. With everything from local cheeses, meats, and pastries, the star of the show is the fish. A traditional salmon on rye open topped sandwich is a must, as well as the rantakala, a warming fish stew perfect if visiting during winter. Hotel Kamp is the place to stay, full of timeless luxury, and only a six-minute walk from the food hall.
