The Mediterranean has always been an iconic holiday destination for many kinds of travellers.
Whether it’s the rolling beaches and beautiful coastline or the thousands of years of history and culture centred around the area, the Med has something to offer for everyone. Our helpful guide to the top Mediterranean holiday destinations has been written to provide some inspiration when booking your next holiday and make sure you get the most out of this amazing area.
1. Majorca
This Balearic beauty has it all; a vast range of beaches such as Alcudia Bay, the Serra de Tramuntana mountains and incredible gothic and baroque architecture all helping to make Majorca a very popular retreat. The Spanish isle is great for watersports too.
2. Antalya
It’s the main city on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast and is ideal for harbour lovers and historians. The ruins of Olympos and the Roman theatre in nearby Aspendos are fascinating but if relaxing is the order of the day, visit the Lower Düden Waterfalls.
3. Crete, Greece
Smack bang in the middle of the southern Mediterranean this Greek island has everything, including a palm tree forest and an average 300 days of sunshine a year. There are ancient Minoan archaeological remains, many local festivals and Greece’s fifth largest city – Heraklion – situated on the island.
4. Nice, France
It doesn’t have to cost the earth to stay in Nice, but it’s one of the top places in the Med if you fancy either trying to pull a millionaire or just watching the jetset brigade wander by, from a variety of chic cafes and from the vast pebbly beach.
5. Cyprus
Blistering summers, stunning citrus trees, club DJs and a very unusual history help make Cyprus a top draw destination. The capital, Lefkosia, is where to go to get a real taste of Cypriot culture.
6. Sardinia
It’s the second largest island in the Med after Sicily and ideal for these seeking a taste of Italian outdoor life and great fresh food. Try the lively Porto Cervo on the Costa Smeralda or the more peaceful, secluded Costa Verde as potential places to stay.
7. Malta
This is one for history fans. Endless foreign occupations of Malta, Gozo and Comino have left big architectural impressions on these islands. For a preserved walled city, Valleta in Malta, takes some beating, but the 3,000 year old city of Mdina and the Norman Palazzo Falzon also totally captivate.
8. Capri, Italy
This romantic Italian island in the Bay of Naples is just six km long and 2.7km wide. Choose spring for room to breathe. It’s got charming houses, narrow lanes, craggy coastline with stunning grottoes and lush vegetation. Shop in the narrow lanes in Capri Town, and lunch on insalata caprese.
9. Tunis, Tunisia
With beach resorts, colonial architecture, mesmerising souks and medinas this north African destination is one of the most exotic on the Med. Perfume markets and a vibrant city atmosphere make Tunis a place to explore. As summer temperatures soaring upto 100F, flopping on the beach is quite a clever idea.
10. Monaco
Casinos and the Grand Prix make Monaco the place to be to splash your cash and enjoy the high life for as long as you can afford. It’s probably the hottest place in the Med to anchor your yacht, go celebrity spotting and either watch Formula One or go shopping down the Avenue des Beaux Arts.
