Know your airlines hand luggage policy and pack to the maximum
Why choose a suitcase that fits the maximum hand luggage allowance?
By maximising your packing capacity, it allows you to cram more contents into your bag for your travels, and pack that extra evening outfit, additional footwear to tackle all terrains and that jumper that wouldn’t have otherwise made the cut, which can really come in handy on those cloudy days, or when the wind picks up at night. The additional space is also great for bringing back souvenirs and gifts for the family back home.
If you normally buy the hold luggage option with your flight for these reasons, a size-maximised suitcase could save you a fortune over a few trips! Finally, it also saves you time when checking-in, and at the other end, avoiding the tedious wait at the luggage carousel – meaning you’ll be out enjoying your holiday much quicker.
What are the penalties if I risk it and my bag is over-sized?
Put frankly, for those that like to live dangerously and take whatever size bag fits their contents, if the airline flags your bag at the gate, you’ll get hit hard in the pocket. The airlines add a charge, as well as airport tax, to make the mistake a very costly one. EasyJet’s on-the-day bag-check cost is £37 at the check-in desk, and £47 at the boarding gate! Ryanair is no better – They will take £55 of your holiday funds for a cabin bag that gets refused at the gate and has to go in the hold. Unbelievably, for every kg over your 20kg limit of checked luggage, they will charge you £11 per Kg too!
What can I take on Ryanair?
Ryanair are the least generous when it comes to the size of bag you can take in the cabin with you, currently only allowing one small 35x20x20cm item, however, they do allow a larger main bag, up to 55x40x20cm, as part of your free allowance. This though, will be placed into the hold when you reach the gate. The 35x20x20cm bag is great for that bit of extra packing space on top of your main bag and can house your in-flight refreshments, an extra layer of clothes, headphones and travel documents. Buying a maximum sized 55x40x20cm bag is a great purchase for all your travelling as it’s perfect for Ryanair, but also fit on flights with EasyJet, British Airways, Jet2 and Wizz Air, as well as 90% of other airlines. See our full range of 55x40x20cm products and 35x20x20cm luggage. Ryanair have just announced that from the 1st November, they will now charge passengers £6 to take their larger cabin bag with them, and only allow a small underseat bag up to 40x25x20cm for free on cabins.
Easyjet, British Airways and Jet2
The other main UK airlines such as EasyJet, British Airways & Jet2 allow a very generous 56x45x25cm bag onto their planes, which is a really substantial size when compared to a standard hand luggage sized suitcase. It truly is surprising when you see the sizes of the two sizes, and that many travellers are not making the most of this allowance, missing out on an extra two days’ worth of outfits! So don’t miss out and make sure you’re packing to the limit. Take a look at our huge 56x45x25cm luggage
