Hidden Hotspots of Fuerteventura

With over 3,000 hours of sunshine every year, it’s no wonder that Fuerteventura in is one of the hottest holiday destinations in the Canary Islands. Just 100km off the coast of Africa, Fuerteventura – or otherwise known as the Island of Eternal Spring – is blessed with incredible weather, over 150 sandy beaches and a unique volcanic landscape.

Aside from the usual stunning beaches, natural parks and old city ruins, there are a few more unusual places you have to check out when you come to this island paradise.

Oasis Park

If you’re travelling with children, Oasis Park is a must-see. This huge zoo is filled with exotic birds, reptiles and primates, as well as giraffes, zebras and hippos. There are lots of interactive animal shows and even a camel safari where you can ride a camel across the island’s mountaintops.

La Oliva

The village of La Oliva was once the home of the island’s military governors and has some interesting architecture and 17th century remains. The Governor’s townhouse, Casa de Ios Coroneles, boasts intricate woodwork, while the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria has an incredible Baroque altar painting and mesmerising trompe I’oeil work. The village also has an art centre exhibitions by local artists.

Llano

The volcanic cave of Llano in Villaverde is an amazing natural wonder. The cave is over a million years old, with a visitor centre and guided tours taking tourists through the 400m of volcanic caves. It has a long and varied history, having been used as a corral for camels, a poultry coup and an arsenal. Be careful where you walk – the cave is also home to a special species of white spider on the verge of becoming extinct!

There’s more to Fuerteventura than meets the eye. Of course, go for the superb beaches and sand dunes, but don’t forget to check out some of the island’s more unique features!
