Across the Arctic Circle
Svalbard: An isolated archipelago lying almost half way between Norway and the North Pole, a place where polar bears outnumber people; and Spitsbergen, the largest island in that group, is arguably the best place in the world to see our planet’s largest land predator.
“Fingers crossed, I’ve never sent someone to Spitsbergen in the summer months and they haven’t seen polar bears” says Sue, Steppes Travel’s Arctic expert.
“Seeing your first bear is an amazing experience. They are magnificent. But in 2025, the government in Svalbard is bringing in regulations that will stop visitors from getting within 500 metres of a polar bear. It’s currently 150 metres, so that’s going to make a very big difference to those wanting to see them.”
