A wonderful weekend in Prague
Prague is a great choice as a year round short break destination.
In summer the streets come alive with artists and music, and the long warm evenings strolling around Wenceslas Square and up to the stunning cathedral are the stuff that the best holiday memories are made of.
However, a winter break is equally appealing for different reasons, and although it is chilly, Prague is the most beautiful winter wonderland, almost fairy tale like when dusted with a light coat of snow. The view across the river and up to Prague Castle looks like it could be lifted straight from a Disney movie.
Walking the streets is exhilarating, but it’s also advisable to take a Bohemian approach and spend time in the cafes as a welcome refuge, and sip hot chocolate or something stronger, whilst watching the world go by. These cafes, much like those of Paris in the 19th and early 20th century, were the places where Bohemian writers, philosophers and their patrons dreamed of new beginnings for their country.
There are 5 main areas to visit, the old city which is where the Old Town Square, St. Nicholas Church, the Astronomical Clock and the Old Town Hall are popular tourist attractions; the Lesser Town around the foothills of Prague Castle; the New Town to the east and south of the Old town and including Wenceslas Square; the Josefov, situated just to the north of the Old City which is the Jewish ghetto area of Prague and plays an important part in understanding how the Germans, Czech and Jews lived together over the centuries, the Jewish cemetery in particular is not to be missed for what must be the greatest number of tombstones in one small space to be found anywhere in the world; and finally Prague Castle, which contains not only the castle with its spectacular views over the city and river, but also the cathedral and other important historical buildings.
